I agree with what you said and also recommend Yousician. It works with the Rocksmith cable as well and they have a free section for the bass. I have not tried the paid stuff.

I'm still plugging away with RS & bought a pitch shift pedal so that I can play those alternate tuning songs w/o too much hassle.

Why didn't I think of this when I was playing?

Ironically I haven't touched my Drop pedal in weeks & my bass has been in those lower tunings C#, D Drop C...
There's a little extra clank, but I don't mind.
