a few years ago, I did a review on the rocktron utopia b100 and parts of the review where I've mentioned the distortion channels was a little misleading. which is why I wanted to redo this review. and thinking back on my experience with the rocktron utopia b100, I would say there some pros and cons with this multi-effects processor. anywho, this is my revisiting and updated review on the rocktron utopia b100.
The rocktron utopia b100 is a different, but an interesting bass multi-effects processor. the effects are sorta limited, but does have a great selection of modulation effects, clean and distortion channels, delays, reverbs, and a wah effect.
The clean and distortion channels sounded pretty decent. there's only one clean channel, but it does let you select 2 different kinds of clean channels. deep and bright. deep gives you a warm sound and bright gives you a clear punchy sound. there are 3 distortion channels. distortion 1 has a light grit sound. distortion 2 kinda sounds like a proco rat at a medium gain setting. and distortion 3 has a extreme metallic sound(think mesa-boogie dual rectifier). the only minor drawback on the distortion channels is that there's no blend control. so you can't mix the dry signal with the distorted signal. only the rocktron utopia b200 and b300 has a blend-able distortion channel.
The modulation effects are the best effects that the rocktron utopia b100 has to offer. the chorus and flanger effects sounds really nice and lushful. and the phaser sounds pretty cool. unlike the distortion channels, they have a mix control so you can mix the dry signal with the effected signal. they sound great with the clean channels and they sound pretty cool on the distortion channels.
The reverb and delay effects sounded really nice. the reverb effect has that concert hall feel to it. and the delay effect has an analog delay type sound. very useful for bass solos and experimental music.
The wah effect is pretty versatile. personally I'm not a wah person, but I do think the wah effect on the rocktron utopia b100 sounded pretty cool. I'm guessing due to it's versatility, rocktron has made single wah pedal versions of the wah effects on the rocktron utopia series.
Well there you have it. this is my updated review on the rocktron utopia b100. despite the fact that this multi-effects processor is limited on other effects, it is an interesting multi-effects processor to check out if you don't use that much effects.
