All I can tell you is that never having Aguilar pickups before they both sound awesome.
As far as the angle I really can't tell a tonal difference between a "straight" one.

I'd like to point out on this bass that a 40mm nut is crazy comfortable...half way between a jazz and a P and you don't see it often. I have a 40mm nut on my Spector and I really love how it feels. GLWTS.

I have the 5 string version of this, and the P-tone is amazing. Huge girth. The J pup is there to add clarity and pitch definition when you're dealing with a boomy room or a flabby cab.
