Rogue Viola (VB100) Bass Club

Anybody know how to tell the age of one of these? Can't find a serial on mine (bought used on eBay years ago) but it came with a black rectangular case with Rogue in gold script on the side.

Thanks!

Updating with a photo of the case.

Tapewound Rogue 2.jpg I can tell the difference between the older '90s Korean ones and the newer Chinese versions, but that's about it. The Korean ones - like this one (mine) - have black body sides, 'cause the body's a hollowed out slab of plywood, and it's a little heavier than the Chinese VB-100's traditional hollow body construction. Other than that? Haven't got a clue...:(

this came yesterday,,, My question is ,,, What strings are you guys using ... thinking about getting some La Bella Deep Talking strings >>>>>?

Most people wind up with flat wounds on their VB-100; and they're usually La Bellas. If you want the "Real" Beatle Bass sound (without shelling out the $$$ for a German Hofner), then I'd go with the short scale Pyramids or TI Jazz Flats - which are called "short scale" and made to fit these basses. But, anybody else's medium scale strings will work. I had the La Bella Beatle Bass flats on this one, but I liked the sound of the Rotosound Tru Bass 88 tapes better. So, that's what it's worn for several years now. A little deeper and woodier than the La Bellas, IMO. Might be because of the different body construction... Plus, on basses like this, I've found that they can be picky - sometimes very picky - about the strings that will tune up and intonate on them. And, on this old Korean VB-100, that bridge in the picture? With the Rotos, it's intonated as well as any bass I own; and without any trouble at all. The La Bellas? Never did intonate as well; close enough to suit what I like to play, but I had to fuss with the bridge quite a bit to get there. However... you can use any string you want (as long as they're long enough); some people have various brands of round wounds on theirs, and like them a lot. I have a Starfire Violin Bass that's currently wearing a set of rounds right now. I don't remember what kind they are, but they actually sound pretty good. They only "sort of" intonate, and it's not the sound you'd expect from a violin bass, but.. not bad at all...

So I picked this lil’ guy up over Labor Day as GC had ‘em on sale. Combine that with the $150 in GC gift cards I had and I only had to put out about $30 out of my pocket for it. Finally changed the strings to some medium scale Chromes and got it dialed in nicely. I had a $25 gift card to Amazon that took care of most of the cost of those, so I’m up to about $34 invested.

Anyway, I’ve pretty much been playing it around the house so far, but tonight I took it to my weekly Saturday night church gig and got tons of compliments from the rest of the band and had a blast playing it. So light and sounded great.

I just ordered a new case for my Rogue VB100 ... I looked all over and found this on Amazon ... now there is only 3 left !!! I was going to get a $59 hard case from Guitar Center but on reading reviews, the Rogue didn't fit unless you broke out a support bar. The case better be the bee's knees because at $109 I could have almost bought another VB100 bass .. (when they go back on sale again) :)
Finding a case that fits is not easy ... There are many violin basses out there but only a few cases ... What kind of case or gig bag do you use ?

I got a Musician's Gear case for mine for $59 (on sale) from MF, and it fits just fine. Not a bad case, either. Better than the Hofner case that sells for $119.

@Scooter Johnson; I have LaBellas on mine and they sound great!

Well, today I did many things to further my zero skills on the bass to a higher level ...
Number 1 .. I got my case on the porch today..
Number 2 .. I put a set of LaBella flat wounds on the Rogue.. with Tucker's help!
Number 3 .. I signed up for online bass lessons with JAMPLAY ..
Number 4 .. I practiced, practiced and had lunch with Tucker!

I do love the mellow tones with the LaBella Bettles Bass strings and they are much easier to tune than the cheap round wound that came with the Rogue. The case fits like it was born with the guitar.

As for the lessons ... I only signed up because they had a one month for less than $10 ... I will see how things go then I might take some real one on one lessons locally. I guess you can say... today is when I started to learn the Bass ! :)

Look what came in the mail today ,,,,,,,,,,
I got a big brother for my Rogue VB100
I picked up a Hofner Icon (in pearl white) from Sweetwater for $250 . I will look it over and post a review in a few days. At first look, other than placing new flats on this pale baby I think the Hofner wins in the beauty contest. But it is the sound that really counts ... !!!!!!!!!!!

SORRY ABOUT THE POOR PHOTOS .. I USED MY PHONE NOT MY CAMERA .

Mine (finally) arrived. Seems to be an older version. Came with a Rogue case. Strings a bit corroded, action pretty high. Will need to figure out how to set this up. Managed to lower the bridge a bit though.
Any idea where I can find the serial number on one of these?

Thanks!
The new VB100's do not have SS numbers ... My guess is ... the old ones are the same !
