Rolls pm 351 anyone using it..

I recently purchased this unit with the shure Se 215 ear buds.. and I must say I'm very happy with my purchase.. 200.00 total for a great wired in ear system..


It's crisp and clear and I can hear everything at a low volume and that's great because recently I feel like my hearing has been suffering from years of playing in loud bands in rooms that aren't treated properly for live entertainment.

I've used this system in 5 piece band setups with my amp and also in 3 piece acoustic gigs with no amp at all and after 2 weeks with this unit I will never go back to using floor wedges. ..

Of course I'm at the mercy of a sound man and how many monitor outs are provided. .

Are any talkbass peeps using the rolls pm 351??? If so holla and let me know what you think??

I'd even be intrested in starting a club as I haven't found one on this forum yet..

I used to use the Rolls PM 351 to monitor just my vocal mic and my bass guitar, but it would have been easy to add a full band mix via the line inputs. I never bothered with that, though. It worked fine as advertised. I used it hard-wired with ear buds, but eventually got sick of being tied down to the thing. I was also using a very small, low power (low stage volume) bass combo in order to keep the stage volume down for the singer who always complained about the bass being too loud.

I work with a drummer who uses the Rolls PM 351 in conjunction with a butt-kicker for his stage monitoring. He says he'll never go back, but as you said, sound check and getting all the levels right in his monitor feed is very, very important.

I had a low volume gig this past Fri and started out with my eden wtdi which I like and feel gets the job done very well. During set break I switched over to the rolls with the ear buds as the speakers were in front of us..

what i noticed between the eden and rolls was the Rolls gave a much hotter output.. With the eden I have tone shaping options and the rolls is pretty dry.. but after messing with my eq from the board I was okay with my sound..

I think by going di out into instrument input on the rolls and di out into Foh I'll be able to have more tonal options from the eden pre?

I use mine just about every Sunday at church. Also use SE215 buds. I run eq's flat into board and let my pickups and dynamics do the work. In my mix, I run the bass channel from the board and blend that with the input on the Rolls. We are using a Presonus 24 digital board and use Q mix to adjust all volumes into a good mix, from the stage. Also at times run my Buttkicker to really get into the feel of the music

I play at a music theatre 250 shows a year. the only place i usually play. We all have our own mix and I havent used a amp on stage for about 4 years now. I just dont like not having any control of the tone I get in my westone 3 driver IEM. I have my mix coming in on a ART headtap now. All other band members have their own monitor and get me thru that. I got tired of the sound guy saying my stage level was to loud so I went direct.

Used one for many years, and it does the job. I'm not a massive fan of the DI. It ok, but doesn't sound amazing. I have on occasion had issues with phase cancellation on my voice when taking a line from the FOH into the line in of the Rolls box, and then using the Mic pass thru to add more of my voice. As I have added my voice, rather than boosting it's volume in my ears, my voice has got thinner and a little distorted. I also had a chip in the instrument channel blow on the Rolls box once, which made my Bass sound distorted. My Tech (Pro Harmonics in Adelaide South Australia) diagnosed it easily and replaced it.

I have recently moved to using a Yamaha MG-06 4 channel mixer, and a passive splitter box, at the base of my mic stand. The passive splitter box allows me to take an isolated send of my mic to the MG-06, that I can switch the phase on, use a ground lift etc. The mixer cost me $100, and the splitter box cost me $30. I keep a 2nd passive splitter box in my bag, just incase I need it for getting my FOH feed, or 2 split of my bass DI feed to both the mixer and FOH. A little extra cost than a PM351, but I am finding it heaps more user friendly, and the sound quality is superior

The MG-06 has 2 mic pre channels, and 2 line channels. I use the 2 line channels to receive my bass (line out from my amp) and the FOH feed. 1 of the mic pre channels, receives my voice from my splitter box, the other mic pre channel I use to receive an ambient/drum mic feed from a Rode M3 mic that I put over the drums. Even though we have drums in the FOH, in some smaller venues there isn't enough to hear them properly, so this allows me to dial in more drums. I like to hear the Hi hat and snare.

Both mic pre channels have a basic eq on them which is very useful.

I used one for the first time yesterday. I really liked it so far. Had to back my Sadowsky preamp way down because it was sending a lot stronger signal to the FOH than the DI I had been using. I use Westone UMpro 30 eim. I could get a good tone.

I used this Saturday Evening at our church. I didn't use the mic because I don't sing, but took a feed off the main (QSC K-12) into the line input and put my bass into the instrument input. I liked that better than being awash in all the separate monitor mixes I usually hear.

My one concern was hearing protection. This thing has a very hot output. I was running it about 45% and it was loud. I wonder if anybody has used this with some type of pedal compressor/limiter to protect hearing. Is there even a compressor/limiter pedal that is stereo?

I bought and returned the 351 as the noise was too much for me when I got the volume where I wanted it for my bass and ended going the same route as Rocksolid above based on his post. Sound is way cleaner on the Yamaha and the splitter boxes do the rest of the work. I ended up buying a dbx 166xl compressor for the limiting off of Sleazy-bay for $80, and the two channels on that will take care of the mic and FOH signal limiting prior to going to the Yamaha. So a similar investment as a Rolls setup if your board doesn't have a limiter. Haven't not used it live, only an at home demo, but I'm very happy with it thus far. The mixer is super small (6" x 8"), and fits in a Gator 1515 bag with the splitters and my 1964's. Decided to buy some pick and pull foam for the bag to keep them nice and snug.

Also, if you don't sing, the PM55P is a good option as it has a limiter. Not sure if it is as noisy as the 351 though.
