Double Bass ...Romanian double basses? Anyone?

I know this is a Zombie thread, but I love my Romanian bass. She's a hybrid where the Backs and sides are veneered laminate from the old T-34 Tank Factory next door, yet the top is a giant slab of Carpathian Spruce that sings like a mid level carved orchestral bass. A rather eclectic little beast that has paid for herself time and again.

Great post! =)

Mr. KFS, you are right about that. I just was never able to do business with them as they insist you must be a dealer. Dealer I am not. I'm simply a bassist looking for a good deal.
My little Romanian Beast was actually rescued from a pawn shop.i have done bow accessory, and sheet music business with quantum.Lynn Seaton thinks rather highly of them as well.

I own the exact same bass it would seem. It's made by Becker in Romania. I bought it new 20 years ago for $800 and it has opened up beautifully and records amazingly!

Mine is an old Mathias Thoma. Normally these are considered mediocre basses. Mine has been a real blessing. I picked her up for $650, and have re-bridged, re sound-posted, and restrung her, and that is it. Old Romanian basses are often under rated simply because so many of them were sent over here before they had time to open up. They don't always open up rich and dark, in fact I found most of them to be very mid-rangey, but they are loud and cut through the mix. The newer Wulturs are definitely the darkest I have heard. It is amazing what a good sound post fitting, and well adjusted bridge feet can do for a bass.
