Well, the Ibanez ATK experiment failed miserably. Thank God I brought my 5 string Century along just in case. I thought maybe the "stingray-esque" sound of the ATK's would be kinda cool for a change, but I was wrong.:rollno:

And yes---Root notes sound MUCH better on a Roscoe.:p:D

Yeah, the 5 string's spacing is no good at all for me. They both looked really cool under the stage lights, but that sound just didn't work very well for me at all. And it's not that they really sound bad, because they don't. It's just not a range of tones that interests, or works, for me.

Well, for me, it goes like this:

I was NOT serious about taking just the Ibanez's to last night's gig. Obviously at least one Roscoe was gonna come with.;)

I AM seriously considering the bass in this thread. There are honestly only two things that are making me think twice----the string spacing, and the oil finish.............:confused:

I AM serious that I did not like the Ibanez ATK's sound. Experiment with cheap basses failed.:hmm:

I AM seriously insane for thinking that a lower-line Ibanez could even come close to playing like one of my Roscoes.:help:

I hear you on the oil finish, looks fantastic, but I hate the idea of the maintenance it takes.


I was gonna say that surely such a small difference in string spacing shouldn't matter, but then thinking about it, I'm not very fond of 19mm 5ers(my Squier J Deluxe rarely gets played because of it's wide & chunky neck, a shame because I'd love a Jazz V to bang about on every now and then), and love my Roscoe's 18mm(well, 17.5mm now that I squeezed them in a bit)...


It's a bloody lovely instrument though.... tone is killer.

Not sure about the Roscoe finish (I'll find out soon enough) but the oil finish on my Rob Allen has taken zero special maintenance in the last 6 months since purchase. I just wipe it down with a little polish after gigs, same as my poly finished basses. At some point in the next 6 months I'll put a light coat of wax on it.

Plus I love the way it feels. Poly can get sticky depending on the weather and sweat amounts. I don't find that issue with oil finish.

I thought they'd need re-oiling/waxing every few months.

No arguments about the feel here, oil is fantastic for the feel. Though, I'll say I never had issues with sticky poly.

I just prefer the gloss finish that they use--both of my current Roscoes have it, and I really like it.

I *could* live with the standard Roscoe string spacing. But, my Century 3005 has 20mm spacing at the bridge, and my Century 3006 has 19mm spacing. I am much more comfortable, and prefer, wider-spaced 5's and 6's.
