Roscoe Club

So, just a few mins ago I happened to walk into the galley where one of my coworkers was watching the Country Music Awards (or something along those lines) live on CMT, when a singer whose name I am told is Luke Bryan does his thing...and of course my attention always goes to the bass player, which is a hard thing to do since the camera always seems to ignore the coolest instrument on the set. It takes a few times before I realize that heck, that thing looks like it could be a Roscoe. Not until the camera shot finally gets close enough from behind the bassist do the 3-piece neck, headstock and hardware confirm that it is indeed a Roscoe being played. Looked like a Maple top Custom Century 5 string...with a Purpleheart center lamination :)

Anyway, that was really cool.

Fellow Rocoe-ites

I noticed an interesting thing over the winter that I wanted to share. My studio room where I keep my basses is a few degrees cooler than the rest of the house due to the heat zones in the house. Amazingly, when I fire up the gear in the winter, it gets much warmer than the rest of the house. I rack my basses (13 soon to be 15) for easy access and keep them in tune round robin as I fire up the studio each time - but sometimes they are neglected for a week or two (SO sorry).

Due to the changes of temperature, even though not really what I would call "extreme" (maybe a 10 degree swing) - I find that all of the basses EXCEPT the Roscoes go sharp when neglected. I am in the habit of not even checking the tuning routinely on the Roscoes, they just sit right there and behave.

Of course, mine are almost 15 years old now so the wood has definitely settled in. Not sure if the more recent ones would exhibit that same behavior or not!

I find that - in and of itself is a pretty amazing thing.

When you open the dictionary and see the word "stability" there should be a picture of a Roscoe next to it.

Thanks so much Keith for always going so far above and beyond for me. I can't describe in words what they mean to me - countless hours of joy for sure!

Best,

BassHappy (sorry edited due to typo should have been 15 years not 25)

The bassists name is James Cook. He is both Roscoe and Aguilar endorsed.

Gard can tell you much more. ;)

:D

God Bless, Ray

He plays Century Standard Plus basses - just like me! ;-)

James actually has three basses, the one he was playing on that award show with is a Custom (Century 3005).

He also has a "hybrid" (looooooooooooong story....) Custom body with a Standard neck Century 4 string with Aguilar HC-4J pickups and an AGV preamp (one of the first we did) - beautiful bass, swamp ash body with a Cherry Sunburst finish.

Finally he JUST got a Century 5 Standard Plus PJ last weekend, the first for both us and Aguilar - it has the very first 5P pickup they've ever finished installed in it (and they did the installation, which really bums me out, because I really wanted to hear that bass!).

Maybe the necks on your other basses are too short to be stable.

Getting the new (to me) Roscoe out on gigs for the first time this weekend. It has been a long time since I played a 35" scale, 18mm spacing bass, and it took a while to get comfortable with it (not that long, but not just an hour or two).

Should be fun. The DR Hi Beams (45-125) sound wonderful on this bass. The upper register is so clear, and the lower register is so massive. I dig it.

I hesitate to even put this up on my Youtube channel, since so many of you guys have put up amazing clips of these basses, and I am very 'new to the family'. But, what the heck.

Here is my new to me Century Signature. Strings are relatively new DR Hi Beams (45-125). Amp is the wonderful little Aguilar TH350 and the equally wonderful Bergantino AE210v. Recorded at pretty much 'gig' volume through my high quality digital recorder, so if you have decent phones, it is a pretty accurate representation of at least 'me and the Roscoe'.

The Aguilar yin yangs nicely IMO with the Roscoe, kind of softening the edges a bit. That 'hi mid' setting on the Bart pre is KILLER IMO.

Love the bass. My chops are not really up to the articulation of this bass (NOTHING can be hidden from this thing)! With the Glockenklang... whew... I need to woodshed another month before I put a clip of that up... there is NO softening of the edges with that one:D

Very happy and honored to own this instrument.

While the overall tone of your bass is great, the slap tone is absolutely perfect!
