Roscoe Club

Fellow Roscoe'ers..

I fly out in 7 days.. Whats the consensus (or maybe I should ask consequences!) on Flying the Roscoe with a Fender TSA case? There is too much length in the bottom, but seems good width-wise tight..thanks

You need to make up the space difference with some really dense foam that will give just a little. You also need to put some t-shirt material around the foam or put a complete t-shirt over the body so it doesn't rub.

Just my suggestion.

**Edit**

As crazy as it may be, frankly, I'm tired of carrying my Roscoe Bass on the plane with me and causing my blood pressure to rise immensely, wondering each plane I board, if they will take it off and store it under the plane.. (especially smaller ones.)

thanks

I am a captain on the MD-88 at Delta so, I have a little bit of experience in the matter. First, if you bring the bass in a gig bag they have to let you board with it. However, you are right, if you board towards the end then space might be an issue. If you could pay the fee for priority boarding then I'd go that route.

As far as checking the bass in your hard shell case, put as much extra padding (foam, t-shirts, packing peanuts) as you can. Then, wrap a few strips of duct tape around the case. If the TSA needs to get in they will just cut the tape.

What are the details of your flight(s)? Airline, aircraft type, city pair(s)?

Get a headless Roscoe! :D

JoelFT, That is hilarious you just happen to be a captain and is/are a bass player and own a Roscoe Bass!! haha. I love it.

You know what, it's funny as sometimes I do board later rather than earlier just because I can't stand the rush of everybody trying to get in early etc.. I am a typical musician and don't' care about rushing into the attack of the plane boarding calls.. I lay back in the groove haha. but I'm kind of tired of dealing with the pressure of actually bringing it on different planes.. Priority Boarding isn't a bad idea. (or early boarding etc..)

The only reason I don't want to put it in a Hard-shell case, is because of one time I flew with a Schecter bass, and it cracked where the volume knobs were, apparently pushed down by the case being crushed.. Luckily I didn't care about that bass as much and it still worked.. I think I wasn't using a good enough case or it wasn't deep enough etc... I do kinda blame myself for not using a better case.. (this was years ago and I can't remember what case I used!) If I find the pictures - ( I may have taken pictures, I'll post them here if interested)

But the Roscoe Bass costs me $4000.. I don't want a crack in that! ha..

I have a Fender TSA 2012-2013 case as shown in the picture in my posts above.. It seems much more rugged and is ok to be crushed.. I guess I can stand on it with my other $1700 Fender bass inside it and jump on the case and see if there are any problems? haha

Yes, I don't care about my Fender bass haha!! funny right?

So JoelFT, my flight this time happens to be a E75 aircraft.. (American Airlines..) but please REMEMBER, that I am going to be flying internationally and switching planes - where it will be all kinds of different planes.. so I can't just gauge on one type of plane.. -which brings me back to using the hard-shell case instead of boarding with the bass in a soft bag..

I will be flying later, probably from England back to the states.. which will be more switching planes etc.. I don't know those air-crafts yet as you can guess..

(*edit, you know thinking about the switching planes, maybe I should bring it on the plane with me as then if my luggage doesn't arrive with me... etc.. oh boy!..)

As far as padding (if I decide to do this!) is it fine to use bubbles? or cloths like such? and I was told to let the bass be able to move a little bit.. so If I jam as much as possible packing, the bass won't move at all.. is this the correct procedure now-a-days?

Does the bass need to have room to move a little or should it be jam packed tight with padding to not move?

Thanks alot!

Yes I think I talked directly with Keith or Gard (can't remember -was awhile ago) about getting a headless!.. I will eventually but not right now.. And I want to talk with them about possibly making my million dollar product for the future - which consists of my Portable Headstock for the future of headless guitars.. A headstock you can attach and detach to make it look more normal for headless guitars!! You know I'm going to be a millionaire.. I'll remember you all here.. ha

Just MHO, I don't travel much.
If I were going to check a Roscoe, it'd be in an ATA case, not just a hard case with TSA locks...
This one's mine:
SKB 3i-5014-OP

SKB inna SKB...
I use a bit of firm foam up at the headstock (1" maybe...).

I want in.

Just bought a LG 3005 on the classifieds here. This instrument is amazing! Best bass I have ever owned and regret buying all the other brands when these were available! Had no idea how good these are!

At first I didn't like some things. Played a Ibanez BTB and was thrown off by the spacing. Also didn't dig the tiny body as I play mostly seated at my computer. However these concerns quickly evaporated after I played it awhile.

The neck feels as its made of freakin cast iron. The bass only weighs 8.8lbs but the action and feel is more solid than anything I have played in my life. I can set the action any way I like. The electronics are very powerful, versatile and sound awesome. Never liked Barts in the past but these are different somehow. First bass that I didn't want to rip the guts out of. Also the first bass I have ever played that the fretted notes sound almost exact to the open strings. Wow!

I first saw and heard one of these when my band opened for Chris Higbee. The bassist for Higbee, Ben Bond (songwriter21) showed me his SKB before they went on and I was intrigued but didnt act on it. Man, I should have sold all my guitars and bought one then. Instead I have had 2 different basses since then and I could kick myself!

Ok, so you'll start out on an Embrear E175 on American Eagle then, connecting to some sort of mainline widebody (probably a 767 or A330). The E175 will have very limited overhead and closet space. However, being first to board you shouldn't have a problem. The widebody will have plenty of space.

I would be very hesitant to check my Roscoes on an international trip with a connection even if I was the one flying the jet. It would be much more prudent to carry it on with you.

The absolute best way to travel with your bass is to ship it. Yep, that's right, box it up at the UPS store and send it to your destination. Much more expensive that way but, it is very safe.

^seconded.

I'm not a Delta pilot, but I'm a Delta "brat" (the old man was with them for about 30 years), and my experience absolutely parallels what Joel is saying. Don't futz around, also, just in case you run into any resistance from ticket agents, gate agents or flight attendants:

Entertainment Industry Law Issues: New Ruling For Air Travel: now you CAN carry on your guitar!

Then go here, print and HIGHLIGHT section 251.4 for the edification of the uninformed among the airline employees:

Good luck, and safe travels, bassfacer! :bassist:

haha thanks.

Yes, I decided I will be taking my Roscoe on the plane with me in a skinny tight small soft case and then I will be wearing it upside down (only for boarding the plane) behind my backpack I'll also be wearing..

ha.. That way they won't even see the headstock, as it will be pointing down towards the floor and under my backpack too!

I'm only going to wear it upside-down for the 10 minutes I board the plane so There won't be any major stress on the neck etc..

Thank you for the print-outs! I had heard of that but Never did print it out..

I'm also bringing a better soft-shell case that I'll probably check under the plane though for when I arrive to switch.. but I have this skinny bag here I'll use to board and fit in the plane!

See how skinny the case is.

That's not a great idea. Just carry it on like any other piece of luggage. Just hold it in your hand. The size is immaterial. If it can physically fit then it has to fly by law.

ok. I will do that.

I am unfortunately a pessimistic person and Always think about how if there was a situation, they will just continue to barrage me with things like "this is a full flight and regulations this and that" and keep pushing how there "isn't enough room".

and then they will take it and try to check it under the plane like right when you board and they give you the ticket and take other peoples baby strollers and etc.. ha.

But no worries. I"m just going to carry it on.. I'll probably be fine. I'm going to let it go and just do it.

Thanks again truly.

Really appreciate the answers.

You'll be just fine, like Joel suggested, make sure you're on board as early in the process as possible - paying for the early boarding may be a cost-effective way to assure yourself of this. Don't act nervous, don't even act like there's anything different or special about you - just get on the plane like any other passenger, and most likely no one will even say "boo" to you.....safe travels!
