Have you tried soaking them in Coke. It cleans Car Engines and Pennies!

Just buy new strings. I’ve never understood the soaking strings to save a few bucks thing. You spend all this time and money on basses and amps and other crap to get “your sound” and then you get cheap on strings? New strings = new bass for me. When I get the itch or a G.A.S. attack, I spend $25 for some strings and bam...I’m happy with my bass again.
I bet with all the Gas you've had this year that you probably have enough strings to last you for years then lol...Sorry man I had to do it.

Develop good habits that'll make your strings last longer.
Wash your hands before you pickup your bass.
Wipe down your strings after you finish playing.
Purchase strings in multiple sets for a better price.
I change my strings every ten years whether they need it or not. .
For a while there I'd just trade a bass when the strings needed to be replaced!
As much as I've traded and sold this year I never wear a set out lol.
The reason I own multiple basses is when the strings go dead on one, switch to the next bass. But eventually, you have to change them all out. But, you just reset the cycle.For a while there I'd just trade a bass when the strings needed to be replaced!

I do really like the D'Addario nickels.
Speaking D'addario Nickels, Has anyone tried the the new NYXL nickels? I found 2 brand new sets really cheap so I have them coming in to try. My favorites so far have been Pure Blues but I really like the stock Roscoe strings to.
They made my fingers black when I played them. I thought the tone was real nice when I put them on initially, but they went dead super fast for me. YMMV of course.

I'm surprised more of you guys don't use Sunbeams. Great sounding, and their "life curve" is so gentle. I've never regretted not changing strings for a gig - they literally last months of gigging before I need to change them! That and they sound better than any other string I've tried.
You guys are too funny with your use coke, or try boiling them, or put them in ice cream cartons and drive around town, or don't be cheap buy new strings every month! 
How do you think I was able to buy these boutique basses or buy any bass I have an interest in? That's right.... by pinching pennies on strings!!!

@JOME77- See, I told you to not encourage @campbems!!! I just spent the last 20 minutes choking on a piece of toasted dry Ezekial bread!!! That right there was too funny!!!
This!! And La Bella RX-N5D are decent strings, too! I'll need to try the Sunbeams @Pacman is pitching.
I tried Sunbeams a while back on my Warriors and liked them. Really loved the tension and softer feel of them.

Just wanted to give an update now that I've got the new preamp installed. Very happy with this sounds I'm getting out of the Roscoe now. Took it out last weekend and played it on four different gigs with three different bands. Country, Pop/rock/soul. and my Billy Joel tribute band. I'm getting a great old school Fender P sound with the front pickup in passive, and a nice modern sound with both pickups in active. It's also a couple pounds lighter than my Fender and my Stingray so that's definitely a plus.
Also I soak my strings in denatured alcohol too. Not a matter of being cheap it's a matter of convenience. Fortunately despite playing outdoors in South Florida frequently I don't need to change strings that often but they will get full of gunk before they start going bad. A day of soaking cleans all that out and I get some more time out of them. It's like eight bucks for can at Home Depot or Walmart and I just soak them for a day in a Tupperware container.
