Roscoe Club

It's all good, Steve. You’ve got a bass that you love. Be thankful every day.
I do love my Koa Century 5. It’s the finest bass I’ve ever had...including more expensive Roscoe’s.
I still think about that “Pino” Roscoe Classic P that Greg has, and my GAS will be particularly bad after I see Pino with John Mayer in a few weeks.

Can someone tell me what strings are on fretless basses that leave the Roscoe shop? Also, if you own a fretless bass, is your priority to protect the fingerboard, or the best tone? 3rd: what strings do you have on your fretless bass, roundwound or flatwound? Thanks for your input. I appreciate it very much.

That's what I've been told as well: D'Addario Nickel Rounds.
My Diamondwood fingerboard needs no special protection. Truth be told, most fretless fingerboard materials don't either. Tone trumps everything.
I prefer rounds - the D'Addario EXL170 that is the commercially available version of the Roscoe set (which is AFAIK available from Roscoeo....)
However, due to the musical genres of my working bands, I need to keep the mwah tamed a bit, so I've progressed from D'Addario HalfRounds to Ernie Ball Slinky Flats (Cobalts) which I like a lot and I now have a set of Tomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats I'm waiting for an opportunity to install.

1. I assume others are correct (D'Addario)
2. I personally prefer a balanced approach - if I noticed strings were eating up a fretless board, I'd probably swap them out to protect my instrument. That being said, I've tried flats and rounds on my diamond wood Roscoe, and for what I need/like, have gone with rounds. Very, very minimal visual wear when I bought it, and it has stayed that way.

3. Dunlop superbright nickel rounds, 40-120.

Wow! Great strings! Dunlop is my current favorite.

What I seem to be reading so far is to go for the best tone. And that is from roundwound strings. From my limited experience, roundwounds tend to give the best mwah tone that we search for. I agree! Go for the best tone. What do we have to lose? A little wear and tear? Make that fingerboard smile back at you!

Thanks, everyone.

Best strings I've found for Roscoes or my Devons have been DR Pure Blues. Nothing sounds and plays as good as them in rounds IMO.
OK. I will try those. Every DR set that I've tried were very impressive. Fat Beams, Low Riders, Sun Beams, Marcus Miller. They all had their own sound and tension. Loved them all.

Roscoe fretless basses leave the shop with the same strings as fretted, D'Addario 170 XL nickel rounds, (.045 .065 .085 .100 .125). I have used these on several diamondwood boards for years without issue. They have good overall tone, growl, brightness, and sustain.

On XYZ basses with ebony or ebonal boards, I have always used rounds. No durability issues for these boards, either.

However, no on would be faulted or criticized for using flats on fretless, especially with a softer fingerboard like rosewood. Many do. Just not me.
Thanks, Fritz. Your new Roscoe fretless is absolutely gorgeous!

Wow, a second hand [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] at Watanabe Music in Japan.

Looks like a beast! Their price is 540,000JPY but deduct 8% sales tax for an international sale for 496,800JPY. You can use xe.com for an estimated cost in your currency. No idea of shipping, but I expect this is probably quite heavy.
