Roscoe Club

So for those in the waiting phase, What is your build going to be?

Hi Shane,

I’ve got an LG3005 Custom Signature baking in the Roscoe oven. This is my first custom order ever, so I wanted to use my favorite tone woods. I’ve just never had this particular combination before.

My favorite body wood is swamp ash. He's going to use a single piece of swamp ash that he's selecting from a larger sheet that he has in stock. I asked Keith to expose the grain so that there would be an uneven surface. He said he has some ideas that he would experiment with on a few swamp ash samples that he has lying around. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with. I’m going with a satin finish, no color or stain.

The neck will be one of his Custom Signature types, with wenge, maple, wenge. I asked Keith what he thought of putting a wenge fretboard on it, and he liked the idea. (IMHO, Michael Tobias practically made his reputation with that wenge, wenge combination.)

I told Keith that I wanted the sound that Roscoe is famous for -- Bart/Bart electronics, unless he can talk me into something else, which he hasn’t.

That’s it. Fairly simple. Nothing too fancy. Although it will take some extra time getting the body right. That could be a challenge for any luthier with less experience than Keith Roscoe.;)

Is the body and top just 1 piece of swamp ash? Love Ash body and Wenge neck and woods as I’ve had that with other basses and loved it.

Yes. No separate body and top. All one piece of swamp ash. Keith said he has an excellent board in stock that he would select from. I haven't seen it yet.

Interesting. Are you going to have it carved?

Signature gets a lot of good stuff with matching headstock veneers (front AND back) and a bunch of other stuff (the Wenge wedge neck). I'm really interested to see how this one plays out!

I actually had a bass built through Devon that was all swamp ash body and Ebony fretboard. Bass was a really nice sounding bass. I’m anxious to see how the Wenge makes a difference as it is my favorite tonewood.

Thanks for your interest, Skip! You have a keen eye for these details. I didn’t realize the Signature designation includes matching front and back headstock veneers ( I thought it was front only). Yes the body will be carved. Maybe I should ask if there is a problem with carving and exposing the grain on the same piece.

I wonder if you could get ash veneers on the headstock? That’d look sharp...

Yes, Keith verified an ash veneer on the headstock top. But I don't know about the back. Can anybody verify this before I ask the masked man hisself (Keith).
Just having a little fun 'yall!:bassist:

The Signatures have matching veneers in the back. I believe if it was me I would rather not cover that beautiful Wenge Maple Wenge woods up though.

Exactly! Wait a minute. Where's Big Daddy Joe on this question? What say ye, Joe? Signature = Headstock back veneer or no?

Does anyone have photos to give us a clue?

Yeah. I've never been a fan of the veneer on the back of a head stock. I love the volute (and it's standard now on all customs).
My understanding is that the Signature also has the recessed knobs too (which I'm not a fan of either).
The good thing is Keith is really good at giving you what you want. He'll work with you on which features that you want (and don't want). In my case (and with my signature) I have a 5A flamed ash top, an abolone "R" on the head stock, the Wedge wenge neck and the volute (which at the build time of mine was not standard for all customs).
