Roscoe Club

I hear lots of chatter about how things in the Roscoe shop are all automated now, with little done by hand, no different than any high production factory. Au contraire mon frere.

"If you go into a shop and they are building guitars and there is no dust, they are not building guitars. Putting together kits, parts. (That's not us.) Here, Kyle is matching the neck to this Waterfall Bubinga Century 6. He pencils in the neck joint line and carves away. . *

Yes sir, here she is. Just past three months. Should be coming into the final stretch of “2 weeks” in the next month or so. I’m told we are waiting on Bartolini. Same issue with my LG5 rebuild.

Here’s a recent recording our praise team made in our guitarist’s studio. I thought it turned out pretty well.

I am playing my Roscoe LG5 FL straight into the board.

constructive criticism welcomed !

It’s very nice Jim. Such a huge and thick sound. It totally supports and fits the the tune and instrumentation. Tasteful playing too man.

Great recording Jim! Also a great job of making a fretless sound like a fretted during most of the tune. You could tell it was a fretless in a couple of the parts (slides to notes) but other than that I thought it was a fretted (which is certainly a compliment of great pitch).
And as Scott stated, "huge and thick sound"!

Love the look of the grain in that wide diamondwood board! That one's going to be a looker Scott!

Does anyone know if there is a ‘new’ standard Bart preamp for the Signature models? The last bunch of Sigs on the Roscoe IG all seem to have a 5 knob layout, I’m assuming to include a passive tone.

I’m in the process of ordering a Signature LG 6 from my dealer but it’s been a week since I heard back. He said he needed a few days to check with Keith about my finish idea, and I asked about adding a passive tone but keeping the 4 hole layout. I was just wondering if the Signatures have a standard 5 knob layout now?

Hummm…
Not aware of a new “STD” version of the Bartolini preamp used on Roscoe. There’s been quite a few special requests on new Roscoes for a VTC and active/passive switch but those have been done as special requests (and are sometimes Bartolini and sometimes Nordstrand preamps; also sometimes 4 knob and sometimes 5 knob layout). The “STD” should still be the Bartolini or Aguilar 3 band 4 knob layout.

Keith seems to be doing a lot more "special requests" than he used to. When I was ordering my Standard Plus basses, there were very few "options" available. Black hardware. Remember when that was kind of a thing? Now, it seems like they will do almost anything - as long as you are willing to pay. My only finish option was oil. I couldn't have a matching headstock. I believe that was because the Standard/Plus basses were meant to be a more affordable version of a Roscoe bass. They were easily the best bang for the buck back in those days. Of course prices for everything has gone up. I'm not bitter or anything. It's awesome that if you don't want/care for teh fully carved body or other Custom/Signature touches, that you can get a killer looking (and playing) bass.

I *do* remember the chrome hardware only thing. It made me think I’d never order a Standard because black hardware is a must for me on any modern looking shape. That rule didn’t seem to last too long ha!

Yes that’s what I assumed, thanks for your info. I have asked for the normal 4 hole diamond layout with a passive tone concentric on any of the other pots but I think that might not be doable. I haven’t heard back yet as I had a few weird asks from Keith and co. I’ll just wait to hear back from my dealer through the shop themselves.

Thanks both for your replies.

Of you go for something other than a Bart preamp then it's possible.

He can can do a passive tone control on a concentric pot for the volume. I did it on my last 4 knob Roscoe. Noll makes a concentric pot that’ll work.
You can also get one that has a PP switch that’ll allow active/passive too.

You can also do a passive tone control with a 250K/250K concentric pot if you put it in the circuit prior to the preamp module. I also did one Roscoe that way.
See attached diagram.

Well that’s just incredible information, thank you very much!

And once more! I really appreciate the info, thanks for taking the time. I’m not too up on electronics so the diagram I’m sure will help me ask for what I’m looking for. Thanks much!

Very interesting diagram. Not to derail too much but had a question about the 18 volts. It is my understanding the 18 volts adds more headroom but never really understood the term as it related to onboard preamps. Does this mean say my "bass knob" has more range persay. Just never really understood why someone would want more headroom onboard. Is there a law of diminishing returns?

The extra headroom allows for dynamic spikes in your playing (going from finger style to a slap or pop). While 9VDC might be fine for normal playing (90-95% of the time) you might exceed the capabilities of a 9VDC power supply if you suddenly play harder.

It doesn't change the gain, or any other aspect of the normal operation of the preamp. it just allows higher spikes without distorting (caused by inadequate power supply voltage). That being said, sometimes it's difficult to determine if distortion caused by dynamic spikes are due to inadequate power supply voltage or the power amp/speaker capabilities (since both can cause it).

My impatience and fickleness are being tested. Neither of which have ever stood the tests of their will very well anyway. I knew having a bass built was gonna be tough for me because of the previously stated admitted character flaws. However I poured gasoline on the fire by bringing Keith another bass that I acquired and asked for a complete overhaul. Unfortunately Bartolini seems to be flummoxing my plans on receiving either of the basses anytime soon. And so what happens now? My wandering eye is more than just focusing on other basses. Shall I say to the point of multiple acquisitions. Oh my.
