Roscoe vs. Lakland Skylines

One time when I was in sam ash just jammin, Playing my (Now on Lay-away) Peavey Cirrus 6 string, some guys came in and said that I sounded REALLY "KILLER" and that I should play with them, but they said "We dont want anyone with a 6 string though..." so I said "**** You guys, Go away" They said "What?" and I Then said "Thats Bassist, Racism and Segregation, And that not cool" They then said, Well you would fit our band PERFECTLY, Your just what were looking for (And they were prolly what I was looking for... Minus the "*******-ness" ) and I think "We Could..." still let you play for us...

***? Who the hell thinks that you have to play a Fender to be cool, or play a 5 string, or that 7 strings are dumb, or that "Jaco only needed Four strings" Ta HELL With all you closed minded FOOLS!!!

And thats the end of my story (Rant).

EDIT: **** whoever told you to play a For or Five string Fender(ish)... The starving Musician is More admorable IMHO.

I went through almost same thing the first time i took my Roscoe out to play through a EBS rig at my local music store.

I had my back to the jacka$$ guitarists while i was playing and they come up to me and yell "Dude, that was amazing..." I turn around to say thanks, but before i get the words out of my mouth they say "Can you play a five string that well? Cause we want a bassist, but not a showoff." ignorant question, and even more ignorant assumption, no? Anyway, i respond

"I don't play my five anymore really because this is a better bass."

They say "But what the hell do you need six strings for?" in quite the annoying tone, so i respond...

"What the hell do YOU need six strings for?" And i got up and left them with pissy looks on thier faces.

Sadly, people in the music scene here in philly are more like those guitarists than they are like us. If i don't cater to them they'll just screw me over :( But just you wait...once i break in i can start to destroy them from the inside out and make way for all multistring lovers! :ninja: MUHAHAHHAHHA!

oh, and congrats on the cirrus! They are awesome basses :bassist:

We've prototyped a few traditional flavored designs, but nothing that completely satisfies. I'm confident that if we keep at it, we'll find a balance of traditional look and updated performance that pays homage to Leo's designs without looking like we raided his parts bins.

I have to agree with Fretless5verfan, Sheldon. Don't change a thing!! You're doing everything right IMO.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but guitarists seem to be much more resistant to change than bassists. I realize that's a bit of a generalization, but there are a lot more 'forward thinking' basses out there than guitars. Guitarists just seem to be more into tradition than innovation.

I think some guitarists are threatened by extended range basses. They like a traditional four string because they feel it can't compete with them for the spotlight. They probably feel that a five or six string player is chops conscious and will demand a larger portion of "front time." :hmm:

That sucks man... But what b15 said about guitarists is Usually true.

But ya know what? Why would they say "We Want a Bassist, Not a showoff"? Wouldnt you want the best bassist/Drummer/guitarist etc... It kinda dosent make sence unless they wanted a "Suck-band".

Ohh, the question... IMHO if you went for a Lakland 55-94 THEN it COULD be COMPARABLE to a Roscoe.

OHH IDEA!!!

I got it!!! Just buy a Crappy MIM Fender Jazz, and when it comes time for the show, just use the Roscoe, What are they gonna do?

EDIT: on a side note... I think that MOST bassists here are better than Most guitarists... Like If we took some random people from this site, and put them in like Sam Ash or G.C. and had them jam, I think we would outdo More guitarists than not...

I was honestly thinking of doing that Funkize, my band wouldn't have a problem with it, but the people we're dealing with would lay into me like none other.

I noticed that alot of you guys are mentioning the 55-94, with a proper setup do you think the 55-02 could SOUND and PLAY the same as the 55-94? As long as it feels pretty solid and i can get the action and a big sound out of it that i want, i can deal without the attention to detail being that these will be banger basses.

And on a side note, what about those new MTD Heirs!? (or older ones for that matter)

I just got my second 55-94, and I am still holding onto my 55-01... not quite the 55-02 that you were asking about, but it may be close enough for you. I think that the Skylines and the MIA Laklands are very close in feel and tone. I have played the 55-02's, and they seemed similar to my 55-94's to me... the fit and finish on my 55-94's is unbelievable, and it is very good on my skylines. Not that the skylines are in any way substandard, it is just that the 55-94's are so darn good! Sorry if that doesn't help much, but that is the best way to explain it...
