Before getting a new neck, which would only make sense if for instance you have a Squier Jazz and you buy an 80s MIJ neck for it, take it to the luthier and spend $40 or so to get it shimmed and setup.

I do my own set-ups on all of my basses, its been properly intonated, and ive set the action and relief just where I like it, I also had to do a bit of nut slot filing since the nut slots were terribly high, but overall there's no playability issues, although I might just spend some money to get the frets leveled as my fret rocker has confirmed that the 6th and 8th frets are a tad high.
