Rum Diary

Tho Fear and Loathing is classic to me (thanx Terry Gilliam) and I liked Depp's portrayal overall (knowing he is / was friends with Hunter and got his blessing for the role)...nothing in these ads for the Rum Diary is selling the movie to me.

I may just wait for rental as I at times really abhor the theater experience... I dunno. Not compelled to go.

The book was fantastic IMO.

REALLY made me thirsty for rum - straight rum...

They drink it straight out of the bottles like beer in that story.

I keep a bottle of 10 cane in the fridge in the back and that is how I drink it. Freakin delicious. To mix it with Coke is to imply the rum is inferior, like Captain Morgan's swill. If I have to share, I use rock glasses, obviously.

Light rum: 10 Cane.
Dark Rum: Sailor Jerry's.

Mixing dark rum with anything else than stomach acids is a mortal sin.

Sailor jerrys is a pretty good, inexpensive rum. But the artificial flavours don't take too well to airation. I have always several rums going on, and I've noticed that sailor jerrys starts to go really foul after a week or two.

Ron Zacapas Centenario 23 anos is the one I'd recommend if one is interested in a rum that is delicious with every sip and is easy to drink. Even if it gets a bit oo much of breathing time. Slightly more pricey though.

I usually buy the smallest bottle of Jerry's, as I second your notes, and I appreciate your suggestion, i will look for this, most definitely. I am no connoisseur, but I certainly appreciate a good rum.

Sorry for the thread derail. I hope it's a good movie, I'm just not dropping moolah at the theater for it. Doesn't look like a pic better served large-screen, not a spectacle flick.

From the trailer I saw, it didn't seem as hallucinogenic-ly driven as F&L, which was kind of a bummer, but I know that Depp is definitely the right man for the job, so I do have hope for it.

Well, alcohol not being a hallucinogen, and the book/film being titled The Rum Diary, I wouldnt expect it to be "as hallucinogenic-ly driven as F&L". I think Im going to check it out this weekend and see if its any good.

I saw it on Halloween. Really enjoyed it. I haven't read the book - have read several other Hunter ST, but not this one - so can't make a comparison there. But I thought it was thoroughly engaging, entertaining, thought provoking, incredibly funny at times, disturbing at others. Maybe a little 'slow' in places... but I didn't view that as a negative thing, just part of the dynamic of the flick.

I love the line, "Your tongue is like an accusatory giblet"!

Hunter S Thompson was one of a kind...

I saw it yesterday. It was pretty good overall. Its been about 5 years or so since Ive read the book, but it was pretty accurate from what I remember. Its not going to win any awards or anything, but it was well done overall. All the acting was great, my favorite was Giavanni Ribissi as Moberg. And Amber Heard is looking WAY hot as Chenault.
