Run GK BLX210 In Series

Hi - I have a blown speaker(s) in my GK BLX210 (200W @ 8 Ohm).

The only 16 Ohm 10" I can find is Eminence Delta 10B.

However, I'd prefer the Eminence Legend BP102 4Ohm, but would need to re-wire in series.

Is there any reason I would not want to do that? I am pretty much only running the 210 with a GK 400RB-IV (180W @ 8Ohms), but I might add another 2x10 later. However, I'm not sure in a 2x10 what advantage parallel wiring gives over series (and couldn't find anything searching around).

I actually liked the sound of the BLX210 until I switched to 5 string, which I think the low B blew the speakers. So I'm guessing based on frequency response the Legend BP102s will works better for a low B.

Thanks for any tips,
Tim

Don't know how well they will match the cab is the problem. The series wiring is not a real problem, just remember if one speaker or wire fails the whole cab goes dead (even if one speaker and the other two wires are good). Most cabs are parallel or series/parallel for this reason. :)

Thanks for the replies, I was already aware of the Paragon speakers from GK, which is what I was trying to stay away from.

So I guess series or parallel makes no difference, but I'm not sure why you would say "the cab is the problem". How is the cab the problem and not the speaker itself? Sounds like you are saying any speaker you put in will have the same problems as the paragon's that were already in there?

Thanks,
Tim

In series wiring, if you loose one driver, you loose all sound out of the cab. Parallel will at least let one work, but also, power handling is cut in half, and the tuning of the box goes all wrong. The best solution would be to have a speaker in it's own cab, not shared. Then you could run parallel to get the power out of the amp, then just use the good speaker that is left to get you through the night.
That box is too small for the BP102. It won't perform any better than something with less excursion, at least that is what the experts on here say.

Thanks Wes, now I get it. The guys at USA speaker recommended the Eminence Delta 10B, which seemed pretty close to the original paragons.
At this point I don't see any other alternative for speaker replacement.

Cheers,
Tim

Oh, and interestingly that had never occurred to me, but I was looking at the Warwick WCA 211 Pro and it seems to have this config. So if you can entertain another newbie question - if I were to run in this config with the GK400RB do I just go each 1/4" in separately into each input on the cab - this still produces 8Ohm? And in that case there's no way to add another cab?

Thanks,
Tim

If you run two outputs into one cab you will destroy both your cab and your amp. A cabs individual wiring makes no difference, but as mention parallel is better because it won't totally die if a single speaker dies. Also to get appropriate resistances with speakers in series the individual resistances have to be very low, not many speakers have a 4/2 etc ohm rating. Every cabs input/output are parallel, otherwise said cab would not work without another cab or wire.

Im also curious, why are you trying to stay away from the Paragon speakers?

1) They aren't available from GK currently and the ones in the GK BLX seem to have a reputation for crapping out after short use (my experience too).
2) I heard mostly good stuff about both selections from Eminence (Delta's and Legends) and figured they would be more durable.
3) I get a rebate from GC on the cab to buy new speakers and I can only order eminence via GC - so I'd like to keep this cab as a backup with some different speakers while I shop for another 2x10, with possibilty to go 4x10.

Ta,
Tim

I can almost gaurentee that the speakers in the BLX series are not the same speakers they use in their higher quality speakers. GC will give you credit for returning the speakers without the box?

Yes, I would bet a case of beer on it too. That's why I figured a pair of the 10Bs or Legends would be an upgrade. Under the Pro Plan, b/c it's under $200 they said it wasn't salvageable and just sent me a check made out to GC to get something else. So right now I'm leaning to the Eminence Delta's to repair the cab and maybe add a 15" so I get better response with a 6 string.

Ah now I see. Taking advantage of the GC warranty. Did the same thing myself a while back.
