Rush: Why the gender gap?

If Rush were really that deep then all of those pretty average young men who dig them would not have gotten into their music. Rush just sings guy oriented music, there's nothing wrong with that at all.

My wife has several reasons: Geddy's voice, you can't dance to it, and a former boyfriend stuffed Rush in her ears every chance he got and couldn't understand why she didn't also think they are the GREATEST BAND EVER. She's not afraid to rock out and likes music 'you can put your shoulder into', but doesn't find Rush to make that kind of music.

As an aside, I absolutely detest Ayn Rand and her 'philosophy', so I ignore most of Neil's lyrics.

I have the Moving Pictures 2011 calendar in my bedroom, and my wife doesn't like the way they looked back then. She says that Neil looks like he should still be in high school, Geddy looks too effiminate, and only Alex looks normal. She much prefers the way they look today, she even finds Geddy attractive! She also likes their music, maybe not as much as a true Rush junkie, but she likes it nonetheless. She also really enjoyed seeing them in concert when we went to see them on the Snakes and Arrows Tour back in 2007. :)

Fact is that some bands are very male-orientated and Rush are one of them. And the fact is that the band themselves don't seem all that worried and even seem to think it a little funny.

Rush seem to be a blokey band for the simple reason that their songs are not catered to the average female tastes- references to the Lord of the Rings, RPG gaming, Objectivism etc. aren't exactly the choice of every woman for subject matter.

I'm female and a lot of bands I listen to are considered 'blokey' bands for whatever reason. But I'm not too worried, as I choose music I like, not music that fits my genitalia.

Not much of Neil's lyrics are directly related to Rand's work. Sure his personal philosophy may mirror Rand.... I think women aren't into it because it's too demanding and invasive music wise and it interferes with them using their brains for what they are thinking about. Guys naturally just can tune out of our brains and be absorbed by outside stimulus, like music, sports, boobs, cars, etc.

I read a book by a neuro scientist that scans brains and he found that men use something like 20% of their brain when chilling and women use like 85%! Anecdote, but I can go look it up if you want proof.

I guess being into Rush is a bit like being into sports stats; some guys love swapping sports stats while girls couldn't care less, whether they are into sports or not.

My wife and sister-in-law are of afro-caribbean descent and both like rock, albeit different tastes. Representative picks:
Sis-in-law: Linkin Park, Guns 'n Roses
Wife: Jimi Hendrix, The Free, Captain Beefheart

I don't think Rush would generate more than a passing interest and I can see the voice being a turnoff there. I mean, now if he'd have a falsetto like Al Green.....

Back in '76 when i was in high school,a real cool girl played me a record. She said "listen to this!" It was 2112. She and her friends were probably some of the first So Cal female Rush fans ever. They were not "dogs". They were not "dumb blondes". They were fans of, and could recognize good music.(Yes & Genesis were some of her faves too) I'll be married to her 30 years this Feb. We have both both dug Rush since then, and saw most tours ever since. I guess she is a rarity.

Rush are and always will be a guy thing. Its like a code word around guys. You like RUSH? That means your in on it. And in no way do I find this wrong or band. I was watching those awesome "shred" videos from the other thread, and the one with van halen struck me: look how david lee roth is preening and glamming it up for the camera. It's like he is performing only to a chick. The only guy in the band that is acting like a male is Michael Anthony. RUSH never did any of that. If you watch the fabulous "bromance" movie, "I love you man"...you will get it!

My wife's response to why aren't women into Rush and Primus: "I have no idea, I happen to like Rush and Primus."

I think she's telling the truth, she has seen both acts live with me and was really into the music.

My best guess is that most women are superficial and stupid. Of course, I'm rather picky along those lines and this could be why I never married until the age of 30. :)
