Russian language

There's already plenty of expertise here, but I thought I'd share since I was once in a similar situation. I took entry level Russian back in university for some misc. language credits. While I didn't give the class the attention it deserved (much like all the classes I took) I did find it very interesting. I also missed the first week and a bit (yay for knee surgury!) and had no problem catching up. I just learned the alphabet on my own (pretty easy, though you really need to hear someone for proper pronunciation) and by the time I got to class I was ahead of most since that was all they had been doing.

Right now, several years later, the best I can do is rattle off a few sentances of a paragraph about Moscow we were required to memorize. If nothing else you can sound like you're really angry with someone while talking about Yuri Dolgoruki.

I'd recommend it, but do your best to learn. I liked it a lot, but failing just about every vocab quiz isn't a good way to learn a language.

One last thing on studying Russian. Russian is a tough language to learn without being born into it (but aren't they all?) and I would not suggest to take up Russian unless you have some interest in using the language.

I suggest you take a look at the language(s) you are likely to need or at least use going forward and focus on that language or those languages.

That said, I have to reveal my background - I am an American and have lived in Russia for the past 10 years, so I'd say that my study of Russian has certainly been useful. But if you do not have a strong interest in Russia or things Russian, you might want to focus on another language which will fit better into your plans.

I always had trouble remembering most of the Cyrillic and the Greek alphabets. Once I learned that the Cyrillic alphabet was derived largely from the Greek one, somehow that made it easier for me to remember both.

That sentance has a funny sound to it. "Вы" is either a formal way of saying "you" or to more then 1 person. blah blah blah, look-I-speak-russian-i'm-a-special-person blah blah blah Have i scared anyone away from learning it yet?

What's funny for me is that even after all these years, there are two Russion folk songs I cannot get out of my head. I can forget how to play the verse to a song in the middle of performing it, but I can't get these two songs out of my head.
