My stepfather opened the case of his Martin acoustic guitar a short while ago for the first time in years. The strings had rusted, and left an unremovable residue on the nut, tuners and bridge. Don't know what exactly will happen to a bass guitar, but the sonic experiment of rotted strings might not be worth it.
My experience has been that the rust just kills the strings vibrancy and tone. No crispness and less bottom. I've been amazed at the difference after installing, even the same brand/size and using the same amp, at how much better non- rusted (new) strings sound.
