S/D Basstits part 42: Mostly harmless

NEW QUESTION TIEM: I just got an EHX Superego. It's cool, but I don't know what the hell to do with it. I also have a Bass Big Muff. I'm considering returning both and getting a swanky ass fuzz to replace them. I'm happy with my current sound, but A new fuzz would make me happier and I just don't know how often I'd use the Superego. Any boutique/ generally awesome replacement ideas?

Filters are always fun. Might breathe new life into your Muff, so to speak.

If you like EHX, give the MicroPOG a try. One of my favorite pedals, for sure.

Superego is on my shortlist of gotta haves, by the way.

About the superego, I can see how it's cool but having blown literally all of my money on it I'm kind of disappointed.

I booked a show for Billows and Asthma Castle at my favorite little Mexican bar and the owner added a band that he said would fit right in.

Um. They're metal. That's about it. I guess it don't make no difference to club owners but I was hoping for a stoner/doom centric show.

Is Asthma Castle too metal for Stoner/Doom? I know we don't fit all of the core tenants but have I been deluding myself this whole time?

I hope you're not too metal for it, because if that's the case, The 5th Child definitely is.

Yeah, I had to jump in too. :hmm:

Myself, as well.

As for the lightweight bass stuff...hey, my shoulder is blown, what can you do? I still play my heavy basses, it just sucks for a few days after. No Mustang Sally to be heard in any case.
I still have not heard this alleged song called "Mustang Sally," and I refuse to find it on youtube, as I prefer to keep on thinking of it as a TB hallucination.

So, looking for some advice for a friend.

He is in the market for a high wattage tube head that he could use for both guitar and bass, along with studio use. He plays in several bands of different styles, so he is looking for something versatile. He'd like to be able to do things like clean bass, heavy fuzzed out bass, clean guitar, heavy guitar, etc.

Some of his bands he needs to be relatively low volume, and the other bands he needs something loud and fuzzed out. He had mentioned how he thought 120W might seem like too much for guitar, but he needs to be heard on bass. I told him I wouldn't go much lower than 200W if he wants to be LOUD on bass.

It will also be used for recording other bands at the studio he works at.

He's been looking at both the Volume and Master Volume Electric Amps.

So basically...
1. Versatile tones on both bass and guitar.
2. Can play quiet, but wants to never not be loud enough for bass.
3. Wants something high quality that he will basically keep forever.

So he's been looking at those two EAs, and of course considering Matamp as well. Are there any commercially available amps that he should also be looking at? Of course I already told him he should look into Dunwich. Sounds like a Dunwich amp would be right up his alley. Maybe some kind of switchable tap to run the amp at 200w/100w/50w or something like that. I don't know much about guitar, so I don't know what bass heads are good for guitar. Any other suggestions?

Mesa D-180. Seriously. I know everyone recommends what they have, but it's a really good guitar amp, too.

I use mine for pretty much everything I do on bass that's amplified. I never play mine clean, but it can be pretty damn loud clean if you turn the master to 10. It can also get wonderfully crunchy at low volumes, on both bass and guitar. Gets a great doom/stoner sound for guitar.

Or he could just get a custom Dunwich head built or something.

That's a nice looking 810. I'm a sucker for natural wood. Cincinnati is a bit too far of a drive though. Cleveland? I'd be all over that.
+1

Its a 56 pound okoume Dually loaded with 3015's. Built by Dave Homer at Gigmaster Soundworks. It has had quite the history. With the options it has it would be $1,180 plus shipping. I doubt GC paid more than $500 for it, so you may be able to talk them down to 900 out the door.
