S.U.B. Club

The back of the neck is painted, so it seems gloss to me. Doesn't bother me, or seem overly sticky, but I've learned from posts in this thread that a lot of folks remove the paint (there are several photographic examples if you page through the thread). Apparently, under the paint it is the same neck finish as Music Man basses of that time period (which I guess is satin). Some folks have also opted to sand down to the bare wood.

The black paint is nitro, which makes for easy removal with acetone. I’ve done a few this way. My current Sub 5 still has that paint and I don’t mind it. It’s getting a cool worn look
Huh, that's interesting! Wonder why they nitroed over what sounds like a normal off-the-rack Stingray neck. But you've convinced me to check it out. $700 seems reasonable these days, all things considered. Sounds like they used to be super-cheap!

My current SUB situation: (L-R) 2003 Stingray with La Bella Low Tension Flats, 2005 Stingray with DR Sunbeam rounds, 2004 Sterling with DR Sunbeam rounds (soon to be converted to fretless).

I’ve had a SUB 5 for about ten years, but I stopped playing it awhile ago because it just got to be too heavy for my old man shoulders, lol. I loved how it sounds, so I’d kept my eyes peeled for a locally available 4-string. That search finally bore fruit, and I just picked up a black 2003 active SUB for a good deal. I took it to rehearsal this week and it was everything I hoped it would be. Slapped on a skull pickguard for good measure, and I’m happy as can be!

I thought I already had a number in this club, but I guess not. If someone is still passing them out, I’ll respectfully take one!

My one minor quibble with this bass has been the lack of center detentes on the EQ knobs (I’m never quite sure where they’re set without rolling all the way up or down). I just installed some chicken head knobs to make it easier to see. They fit the rugged vibe for which the SUBs are known, as does this super evil pickguard I’m about to install.

Very nice collection!! Did you have the Fretless conversion done yet?
A funny thing happened... Long story short, a deal I couldn't pass by came my way for a used Rob Allen fretless, so I bought that instead. It's turned out to be the perfect tonal fit for the project where I wanted a fretless. I then decided to sell one of the SUB Stingrays, and keep one SUB Stingray (with roundswounds) and the SUB Sterling (with flatwounds). The Sterling sounds amazing with flatwounds, and the Stingray with rounds give me that classic sound when I have need of it.

Yeah, it's kinda weird to play a 2EQ. It's not audiophile cut/boost... I have my knob's set screws positioned so 'noon' is pointing straight up at me. My usual 2EQ is volume all the way up, treble at 4ish, bass at 2 ish.

I had to dig through the archives to see if you’ve been given a number before. Nope, so #70 is all yours.

On all of my Musicmans 2eq/3eq, I set the eq to my favorite go-to settings, and then I loosen the set screws and re-positon the knobs so all of the screws would be pointing strait up.
That way there's no question if something gets bumped or moved I can quickly reset 'home' for me. (I do the same on my P bass)

Y’all. I just scored this sick SUB and it’s currently in transit. I wish I had more detailed photos to tide me over in the meantime (cuz I’m a freak lol) but to say I’m stoked would be an understatement.

Currently looking for a stock diamond metal guard, if you’ve got a spare hit me up and I’ll buy it! Can’t tell if that’s a compensated nut or not. Its born-on date is July 13th 2005.

Bought my SUB maybe 7-8ish years ago, always saw them as the "forbidden third option". The one I bought had a few upgrades; SD Bassline pickup, a two band active EQ (I'm 80% sure it's also Seymour Duncan, but I can't quite remember) and an upgraded bridge. The output is nuclear hot to the point where I think I should mess with the internal gain switch. I'm usually pretty hands-off with internal components, so I have a -6db gain patch on my Helix when I use it. Do you think I should turn the trim pot down a little or just keep using a small gain reduction? I use a DAW/headphones 95% of the time now.

Not the same kind of SUBs (USA made 2003-2006 by EBMM, not the SBMM ones), but that SUB you've got looks fantastic and they're not bad at all. In fact, I'm looking for one just like the one you've got ;)

I would most certainly turn down the gain internally.

Well, I'm down to just one SUB, the Sterling. As part of an intentional (and somewhat brutal) "thinning of the herd" I sold my last remaining Stingray. I think I'll probably keep the Sterling long term. It sounds amazing with TI Jazz flats on it.

This week I stumbled upon what appears to be a factory fretless SUB Stingray at Guitar Center in Denton, TX (seen on their website) and was tempted, but it's overpriced for its condition (the back of the neck appears to be pretty dinged up).
