Dug this out of storage this weekend. I bought this from the original owner back around 1986. He had it for only two months. It was custom ordered and he just wasn't digging it. I remember him showing me the reciept for over $900. It was a pretty expensive bass in it's time. In the short time he owned it he stripped the finish off the neck and applied some sort of oil and swapped in EMG's. At the time EMG's were the hot new thing. It never had particularly low action. I had it set up professionally when I bought it and the tech told me that the Kahler bridge should have been routed into the body. As it sits you can't lower the saddles without the strings contacting the intonation lock screws.
I played it as it was for a while but never really fell in love with it. At one point it developed a hairline crack on the back of the neck behind the nut and I just out it away. It has gotten worse in storage. In general it's pretty beat up. I was in a metal band and was pretty rough on instruments back then. The finish is very thin. It looks like laquer to me. Definitely not poly.
