Sad NBD vent - Am Pro II Precision

That’s all too bad to hear and see. It’s all been said but yeah. If I was going for a FSO it would probably be a Warmoth neck or a Lowe neck on a Fender body. Or a Nash or something like that. Used of course. Probably from the classifieds.
Actually if I was going to throw down right now it would be for the 400 dollar History j in the classifieds.

re: FSO neck's, allparts necks are very decent, and i've onkly read good things about musikraft and MJT but never played one ...

i could see from a couple feet away (if it were in front of me) the frets were leveled but not crowned. I've seen some "medium" priced, >$1k gibsons
and Fenders recently *(since start pandemic) that had that problem

OP: there are people saying there’s no QC issues at US Fender? That’s a hoot. I’m a total Fender P player and I’m happy to report that my recent Am Pro II only had the bridge tilt wrong by about 1mm so I just have to move the string one notch over on the E.
EDIT: and my Vintera road worn is the #1 fretsprout-prone bass I’ve ever owned.

Yeah, I'm a Fender fan, but they're breaking my heart. The QC has gotten abysmal. Strangely, I feel like the problems have gotten worse at the higher end. The Squier QC is still pretty good, the MIM is hit or miss, and the MIA is awful.

They've got a bulletproof brand, but they seem to be working hard to test how bulletproof it is, between the QC and the recent price increases.

I'm still on the Fender wagon, but if I wasn't so wedded to classic P specs, I would be jumping ship. So many other makers have spotless QC for better prices.

If I were running that retail business, I would make more space for other manufacturers- regardless of profit margins or gross revenue. I wouldn't want to be perceived as the golden arches of guitar dealers. Annoying customers with inconsistent gear (or consistently crap gear) is a slippery slope.

Wait... that's a great opportunity to make some extra $$ with in-house Plek service.:meh:

You pretty much nailed it!

Indeed, I like Fender's products but there QC is dreadful. Sadly some people like to bury there head in the sand about this.

I see threads here and elsewhere about other bass brands bad QC issues. It happens. And they run here to post about it. The difference is when it is a Sadowsky, the thread gets like 2 replies and falls by the wayside. When its Fender, everyone comes in to pile on and it becomes a 10 page thread.

Maybe that’s because their prices have like doubled in the last two years. There is an absolute QC decline pattern going on. I’ve experienced it myself with several new Fender purchases since 2023.

I have to admit when I bought an MIM Mustang bass recently the price increase was a shock and that's probably the cheapest player series bass Fender do. I really like the bass but it does feel like a slight step down in quality compared to the one I owned when the first lot of the PJ Mustangs came out.

a bit upsetting to read, especially since it's an AM PRO II.

i recently got a 2021 model used and it has really met all my expectations.

i did a bit of research beforehand and found that reviews were extremely positive with the exception of some complaining about the price point...

i hope the OP returns and replaces it because it's a fine bass.

I recently bought an Am Pro II P-Bass from an online retailer and it was perfect from the factory (aside from slightly adjusting the intonation). In fact I liked it so much I bought 2 more (each from different retailers) and those were near perfect too!

How do you know that the one you bought came from the factory that way? Isn’t it possible it was a return or a floor model?

So, I've had the desire to try one for a while. Just received it yesterday, and I have some thoughts about the state it left the factory. I am not expecting perfection, and I know full well that wood is, well, wood, and there will be some inherent variation in grain, density, etc. But still - picky buyer alert.

For a start, I checked how it played, found some buzz, then set neck relief to .013" and let it sit for a few hours. Tuned to pitch and checked string height, some weird buzzing here and there. The strings weren't in the right notches on the bridge for 19mm string spacing, but looking at pictures this seems pretty common, and easy to fix. So, that was addressed.

The things that are harder to fix: A high fret around the 10th fret on the A string. Going up from .010 to .013" neck relief seems to have addressed that, but the rattle was clear and only clear at that fret (fretting 9th, 10th rattled) on that string. a very faint rock from a fret rocker there. Ok fine, .010 is technically below spec anyway, and .013 vs .012 doesn't mean that much to me - tolerable if a bit annoying at this price point.

A divot in the fretboard, parallel to the frets (so, not the grain), under the D and G strings between the 13th and 14th fret. Tool mark, maybe:

Yes, there looks like some scoring on the fret below (towards the bridge) of the divot around the D string; easier to see in the image, not so much in they playing position. The divot it pretty easy to see. Again, this is a new bass and I don't slap or bend. These are frets I would use, however. There are a handful of shorter, shallower marks along the treble side of the fretboard that aren't as visible in the playing position as this mark is.

I could live with all that (though I bought brand new so it is annoying), but what really irks me is the A string has a nut slot cut so low there is zero clearance between the string and first fret (when fretting the third). Less than 0.005" between that and the first fret (string open) so of course it rattles like hell on the open A. Playing the open A even moderately hard rattles badly (plainly audible acoustically and through an amp). This is easy to measure and it should have been clear they cut it too deep before it left the factory. I would much rather have nut sluts too shallow than too deep.

This is a brand new instrument that requires a new nut or material added to the nut and a bit of fret work to play decently well at factory action (and it isn't like a quarter mm or so raised action will help the slot being too deep; for the record I tried setting the string height over 3mm for the A string). I haven't even looked at the body finish (at a glance it looks fine to me), but this does not seem acceptable for a premium instrument running just south of $2k, setting country aside. Yes, I can level and dress the frets, add material to the nut slot and ignore the divot; but this isn't a $500 bass. There should be no "Friday" basses at this price point. Also, why even bother to try to cut the slots for an ultra low action if the fret leveling isn't good enough to use it that way?

I'm not worried about returning it or working something out from the place I bought it from, but I am annoyed that Fender sold this to a dealer in this state. This isn't a ~$680 standard or $850 player ii, and yes I expect more at ~$1900 or so. I've seen worse, but this is still disappointing.
I don’t know about the State it came from, but I’d be sending that one back. Man, I’d also be on the phone with the firm that sold it to me. Totally unacceptable. Hope this works out in your favor.

Exactly this.
