Sadowsky Metroline PJ or FCS?

Been going down the bass rabbit hole looking for a good instrument to keep in my studio.

I’ve toyed with the idea of a few things, but have ultimately decided to just bite the bullet, and buy a top shelf bass. I’m mainly a guitarist, but would like to add a bass to my studio. I like classic tones, and will mainly use this instrument for folk, Americana, funk, and jazz.

I am mainly looking for a good p bass, but am not ruling out the right j bass.

After looking at quite a few Fender Custom Shop P and J basses, I recently discovered Sadowsky. Unfortunately, their NYC line is a bit beyond my price range, which tops out around $4K. However, I am intrigued by their Metroline series, and am looking at a PJ model, which is priced around $3800.

I would love some advice, since none of these instruments are local, I will be relying on store return policies to help me make a decision.

Here’s where I’m at. I love the classic look of the Fender Custom Shop basses. I love their sound, and think the build quality is very very good. I like the idea of a slightly relic’d guitar, but that is not a must have. I think sticking with a classic is a safe bet.

I love the workmanship and versatility of the Sadowsky PJ. It is clearly modeled after a Fender bass, but has just enough of a different design that it doesn’t look like a clone. I think a PJ model gives me more versatility, but I’m really not sure how much I need that versatility for what I do? I have never played an instrument with active electronics, and I’m not sure I want that in a studio bass. But I’m curious….will it do a better job at classic sounds than a Fender?

Im slightly leaning toward a FCS bass over a Sadowsky at the moment. Im hoping those of you who are familiar with these instruments can shed some more light and help me make a decision!

thanks!

I've owned an early Sadowsky Metro Jazz 5 string and currently own an NYC Jazz 5 string. While I've never owned a PJ, I bet the current Metroline would be pretty awesome. Sadowsky's are fabulous basses and I wouldn't hesitate recommending one. That said, a really nice Fender P is hard to beat, especially for your needs.

Personally, I've always recorded with active basses. If quality (which the Sadowsky would be), they work just fine and I'm not afraid using one.

Either option you pose are great basses. I would lean towards the Sadowsky if it were me.

Happy Hunting.
