Sadowsky vs. Fender (with pics and soundbites)

Your Fender has 70's pickup locations.
Your Sadowsky has 60's pickup locations.

The 70's is always going to sound beefier and more like its on steroids when active than the Sadowsky.

The Sadowsky pups sound more modern, but the pickup locations make it sound more round.

I like the Fender better. :hiding:

PS: The number of winding on a pickup = the output. Pre amp's are after the fact. Body woods have more to do with color and nothing to do with volume output. Play the instrument acoustically to hear the body wood resonance.
PSS: I bought my Jazz Bass for the way it sounded not plugged in, it sounded like crap plugged in. Then I changed to pickups to match the body resonance.

What do you mean? An Ohmmeter measures resistance (or impedance). You want output; I think I have to measure in Volts.
Anyway I tried both and can´t get any result :confused:

I think, in your recordings, that I like the Fender tones . They seem brighter, with more deep low end, perhaps a bit mushy in the lower mids. I've gone back to my Fender 5 string after a long run on my Warwick Thumb(B.O.) I did change the 'tronics with EMGs and the EMG circuit (BTC I think:hmm:). I'm curious about the new American P-5. I'll throw in some pix.

Very surprised, but I prefer the Fender...

I'm a huge Sadowsky fan. I have always loved Roger's workmanship and innovation, but I gotta say IMO the Fender just has more authority.

I think it's a low-mids thing that really gets me. The Sadowsky has a nice 'sizzle' and spark to it that I think makes it sit very well in a mix and helps it to stand out in context with what's going on around it, but the Fender also has a really sweet presence to it. The highs are crisp, the lows are enough without being too overemphasized, but the mids are what really do it for me.

Have to say I'm surprised!

For some reason, I cannot hear your sound clips. Can you help me? Are there any special settings I need? I am very curious as I have a '65 P Bass and 2 Sadowskys...both 4 strings, but one the modern 4 and one the classic JBass 4.

Interesting, and thanks for all the effort to post these clips. I do have to say that I think the post should be titled "DiMArzio Ultra Js vs. Sadowsky humcanceling," though. If the original Fender pickups had been used, the comparison would have been different, and really more valid as a Fender vs. Sadowsky comarison.

No matter, this was a fun set of clips to listen to. I prefered the Fender with the Ultra Js because it sounded a little more defined and had a little more edge to the sound. It would be cool to hear these in a band mix situation.

But can any tell me what the locations are (the distance between the bridge and the PUs) ?

the fender seems to have a smoother, warmer tone than the sadowsky both in slap and fingerstyle. it had that jazzy feel that fenders are so loved for.

the sadowsky had a little more treble to my ear, and was snappier sounding.

which do i like better? although im an active pup kinda guy...i love the sound of that fender...its just soothing...

I thought I'd prefer the Sadowsky but I liked the Fender better in all the clips. This particular Sadowsky sounded a bit anemic to me.

The Fender also had that Marcus tone that "you can only get from an ash body with a maple fingerboard". ;)

The measurement has to be from the nut. The distance to the bridge is not a constant due to all the various bridges on the market. I'm posting from home, so I can't measure right now from the nut to the center of the neck position J pickup. The distance between the two pickups is 3.6" on a 60's and 4" on a 70's.

I have a Fender CC 5-string and I am thinking of selling and buying a NYC UV 4-string.:hyper:

I just don't know which Sadowsky bass to get yet. I have a Fender 62 p-bass reissue and a 75 j-bass reissue. So, I don't want to duplicate what I already there but still want a bass for classic rock and 12-bar blues but with a new tone. I'm confused!

Hi there, unfortunately i've already sold the 77 jazz. I had a buyer come up. Right now i'm just not really an Ash/Maple guy. Both are great basses, the 77 sounds like a fender and the UV70 with singles sounds like a Sadowsky. It has the fat preamp and overall it just sounds more even. Maybe see if you can try some metros - the MV4 and UV70 4 to hear the tones and then order one to your specs... The UV70 metros 4s come with a 10" radius fingerboard from memory

If spending that much money, why not go the extra and get the NYC? - that is what I meant just didn't say it. Besides, Dakota Red is only avail on a NYC.
