Sadowsky vs. Lull

If this helps you for what im trying to get, i played a nash jazz, and was completely blown away by the sound, but i wasnt a fan of the thick (er) neck then on the CS Fender that I a/b ed it against. I am also doubting that I can pickup a used sad. metro in my price range, so sadly i dont know if I can do that....:(
just to throw a wrench in the works, what do you guys think of Lakland DJ skyline? Im diggin on the look of the CAR one that basscentrals got...

I'm basically a "Spector" guy, but over the past year or so, I've been getting back into a more vintage kinda vibe, and picked up a Lull M5V from another TB'r that I really like.

I have been considering (for my next Bass) either a Sadowsky or an Alleva Coppolo. But one of the concerns I have, is that all my current 5-strings (Spectors and the Lull) are 35" scale. I know this is a bit off topic, but do you guys have any issues switching between 34 and 35 scale instruments, especially during live performance?

If I spend enough time with an instrument in practice, then no. But, I don't like to switch between them and I basically only look for 34" scale basses now. I'll keep my MTD 535, but no more 35" scale for me unless it really knocks my socks off.

A Sadowsky in passive mode, using the VTC, can get real close to that old Fender sound. I compared my Vintage 4 string P/J to my 65 J and 64 P over in the Sadowsky Club topic.

But the wood and build quality of the Sadowskys are great, great fret work, etc...

I agree... My Sadowsky NYC PJ5 is extremely versatile. It can go from a very modern sound to an old school sound in passive mode with VTC. The quality and fit are amazing, and is just beautiful. It's very light for a 5 string (around 8.5 lbs) and plays beautifully.

I would not describe Valenti as old school. My Valenti V5 is very modern sounding with Nordstrand NJ5 pickups and Aguilar OP-3 preamp. Maybe if I put flats on it would be more old school, but not with nickel rounds. A used Valenti would be a good choice in this range.

I this price range, I would get a Lakland Skyline JO or DJ and never look back. I have a JO4 and it is a great bass. Used they go for around $800, and new for $1000 -$1250. For the price, it's an amazing bass.

I walked into a tom lees (think asian Guitar Center, except smaller) and they had 2 TWO sadowskys hangin on the wall, and I had to try one....I was actually just goin to check out the new am. std. fender jazz, but this was alot better....well I played a sadowsky MV5-24...it was AMAZING! Absolutely Amazing....fretwork was some of the best I have played, just felt RIGHT. haha I am looking for a 4 string tho, so I had to pass (and this metro was 3000 US...sigh...such are import costs...). The mv5-24 was a bit bright with the soapbars for my taste, but I could get every tone under the sun...so anyways I am really on the prowl for a sadowsky UV-70 now...with VTC of course...Im Jc. what do these things go for new/ used? I really dont want to part with my warwick, but if thats what its going to take...then I guess ill have to...

Roger...I love you. Your basses are the bomb.

Nope, not a bit! I have:

Alleva Coppolo LG-5 34" scale
Ken Lawrence Brase 5 35" scale
Lakland 55-94 35" scale
JUST sold Sadowsky 5 34" scale

You can definatly feel the difference between the basses but it is not enough to matter to me. I just pick the bass that I feel has the right vibe for the song but usually use either the Brase of the LG-5.

BTW - I've been playing the Maylee Thomas Band CD's all week.... GREAT STUFF!

My UV70MW 4 string is by far the best bass I have ever owned and there's been quite a few. Check out the Sadowsky site for prices and you might even find a pre-owned one for sale. It won't be mine!

I haven't played a Lull, but as the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." I was always hesitant about a bass that could do everything. I always felt that a bass should be able to do ONE thing really well, and that you should own multiple basses for different applications. My Sadowsky RV4 bridged the crap out of that gap. I'll be taking it out on tour with my loud pop rock band this summer. Outside of that, I'll be using it in my country/folk worship group, my jazz studies, and the majority of session work I do in the studio.

I agree also that playing in passive mode and rolling off a bit of the VTC will get you right into Fender Vintage Jazz zone. I remember playing a Fender CS '64 Jazz. Whew...I was bummed. It sounded great, oddly enough, very close to my Sadowsky, but I remember feeling the fret wire somewhat poking out of the neck, scraping my hand! Not sure if this is "vintage" haha. Weird!

Sadowsky's are in a league of their own. You'll still get producers who are Fender snobs. It's kind of a bummer how we've all grown up and seen FENDER as being the name associated with THE BASS. It's almost been ingrained into our minds for Fender to be our go-to company.

Anywho, that's my rant!

Hey Thanks Dan!...I'm glad you like our stuff..

BTW, I have been playing a Lull MV5 a lot lately, and want to check out a Sadowsky and an Alleva Coppolo soon. For the past few years I've been gigging Spector Basses pretty much exclusively, but have started to get back into a more...vintage kinda thing...at least from a "feel" and ergonomics perspective.
