Sadowsky - why do you need one?

Under ideal conditions, Sads sound amazing but not necessarily what I would call a marquis tone. Thre are other basses that will do better.

There are other reasons like support and flawless construction but you can find that elsewhere as well.

But, under less than ideal conditions and downright crummy conditions where the room sucks, the PA sucks, the sound guy sucks, a Sadowsky will keep going when all the rest are long since mud, woof and boom.

Marquis cut and clarity. THAT is why you pay what you pay.

I worked for it, I have the money for it, it's my hobby, it's what makes me happy. That should be reason enough for my girlfriend.

Otherwise, next time start complaining if she buy's anything you view as useless and be SURE to bring this up as a leverage "if YOU buy that <insert useless thing> I can have my sadowsky"

Play one and you'll know why you need it. My Wife is very cool when it comes to my equipment. I save up my overtime money to feed my disease. So nothing is taken away from the house money.

I've done over 2500 paid gigs without a Sadowsky. The only bass you need is the one that gets the job done.

Have you played a Sadowsky? Are there any stores in Montreal that carry them?

Tell your wife they're comfortable and light and will help prevent back problems down the road.

I don't. My cheap, discontinued Yamaha BB605 with Bartolini pups and preamp works just fine. I can't really justify an expensive bass to myself any more so I don't need to do it for my wife.

Now, preamps, DI's etc., that's a different story...

That's going in my profile. I totally agree, endorse, and am about ready to marry this statement. If you need/want a Sadowsky for the gig you do, awesome! If you don't, that's cool too. I have yet to play one, but from what I've heard of the Sadowsky sound on recordings/youtube/sound clips, they're not bag of tea.

I couldn't justify a Sadowsky to my wife, (we are not in that financial bracket yet) but...

When I started playing gospel music, she baught me a 55-01 for Christmas/Anniversary.

She has determined that sometime in the future, she wants to buy me a Skyline Hollowbody. (And I have determined that I will let her.)

Two weeks ago I was playing an Ibanez Artcore AGB140. She gasps at how beautiful it was, takes out her phone to check our bank account to see if the $ is there. It isn't, but a week later our paychecks clear, and you can guess what I baught!

I don't buy any bass gear that can't be funded by my musical endeavors. If the music can't pay for it, I don't buy it.

Luckily, I gig a lot, do some buy/sell wheeling & dealing, record periodically .... so money hasn't been an issue for a very long time. And I never put my family finances at risk.

Sadowsky's aren't my thing, but there are plenty of other temptations out there .....

To answer the OP. You don't, I bought one due to the overwhelming TB hysteria about Sadowsky's, only to find it the single biggest let down in any bass I have ever purchased. Nope there was nothing wrong with my Sadowsky, but it is just an average bass with average parts that has been marketed very well - Kudos to Sadowsky for that.

Look here are the results, why it is simply laughable.

The answer is - you don't need one. You may WANT one, but if you're not making your living with the instrument you don't need one - and maybe not then. Plenty of pro musicians make a living without one.

OTOH, think about your car - a much more expensive purchase. NO ONE drives the car they "need". If they did, we'd mostly be driving Checkers or Minivans, with a very, very, few pickups mixed in. (90% of pickups are driven by people who have no business driving one, because they never use it to haul things.)

People drive the car they "want". They choose color, style, features, etc. that have no relation to their actual base needs. And then they spend many thousands of dollars extra to buy that car. SUV instead of minivan, sports car instead of sedan, pickup instead of passenger car.

So be honest - you don't need it, you want it. And if you have the money for it without going into debt, it becomes a purchase of choice, not need, just like many other things you buy every month.
