Sadowsky - why do you need one?

Hmmm....I don't think I can justify any of the high end purchases I've made. Sometimes I go overboard when I get a bit enthusiastic about a hobby, and bass is no exception. I've got some nice gear that needs paying off, but when I do, I will have my MTD 635 forever, and that is a nice feeling. Even though I currently love Epifani gear, amps kind of come and go for me. I don't get nearly as attached to amps and cabs as I do my basses.

If anything, I tell my wife it is an "investment" :D

Also, just looking at your profile, you own a lot of very nice mid to high priced basses, where as I only one three basses, one of them being high end. If you were to sell off some gear that doesn't get used much, you could have yourself a nice Sadowsky easily.

Yeah, I can't really justify it and never really do anymore. My justification now is I want it and it makes me happy. My problem is that I rarely unload equipment, I just accumulate it! In fact, I have no reason to get a new bass because I am completely satisfied with what I have, but you know how GAS works...

Easy answer...you don't NEED one, you WANT one ;). I've played a couple high end bassed, but they just don't seem to be worth the extra money to me. I gig my basses, in bars, clubs, etc. They will get worn over time, and carrying around a $2000 bass doesn't make sense in my situation. If it works for you....buy it....toys are good. Just make sure you take the wife out and spoil her a little and she won't care so much.

Make enough dough playing the basses you have now to pay for the Sadowsky. Even if its just one gig every two months eventually you'll make at least enough to grab a used one:) It's a little different for me I really don't have to justify the gear to my wife since we are both professional musicians. In fact, my basses are a tax write off:smug:

Rushfan73 has it right! $300 shoes, $1200 handbags, $30,000 pick-up trucks, $2,000 bass. If it's about what you need, well, I guess I could still be playing the old '76 FJ I started on, but I really enjoy my Sadowsky's. I appreciate them every time I hook them up. Would the old FJ pay the bills, perhaps, but if you appreciate the quality of a well made instrument you owe it to yourself to at least try a Sadowsky.

I never knew exactly why I had to have a Sadowsky, until I finally got one. Now, if it were stolen or damaged I would not hesitate to replace it the next day. I've also done everything in my power to make my MIA Jazz as close to a Sadowsky as possible.

Luckily my wife is really good about these purchases because they're really tools of the trade. Sure, I could use something cheaper, but that Sadowsky tone can give you the edge sometimes and I know it's gonna sound good every night. When you have random sound guys coming up after the show and giving you unsolicited compliments on the sound of the bass that makes it all worth while.

The flip side is that I can't make any comments about how much my wife's shoes, purses, clothes, jewelry or hair care cost. And I'm quite sure they all add up to a lot more than my one Sadowsky ;-)

Well, I'm single and do as I please.
Why did I get a Sadowsky? I've played a lot of Fender Jazz basses and they never quite did it for me. Walked in w/ money in hand and walked out without one. I'm narrowing down now after owning many basses. Decided to definitly keep the MTD, keep a Warwick around, but I needed something to fill that Jazz niche. The Sadowsky did it for me in spades.
The short of it is, I never found a Jazz I liked till I got a Sadowsky. Gas pains relieved, unless I get another MTD or Sadowsky modern 24.:D

You need to do it like asking for a raise at work. You want it, you might deserve it, but before you get it, you have to fight tooth and nail for it and tell them why you deserve it. If you don't believe yourself that you deserve it, it wont work. Arguments such as....

My gigs bring in just enough money to justify a purchase like this once or twice a year, and I haven't bought any gear in two.

We spent _____ on your hobby recently (make sure you say WE, and not YOU, you don't want to make it into a "you did so I can" thing, so much as "we did that as a team, let's do this as well")

My current gear isn't suitable for what I need right now. (Maybe it's not high enough quality, maybe it doesn't suit the band or style you are playing now, maybe you have to lie about this one haha)
