Sandberg Lionel P: What strings work well?

Hi all,

I've read the existing threads and still a bit curious as to some opinions on strings for the Sandberg Lionel (P) bass.

A few criteria for what I'm interested in:

1. I am interested only in folks who have kept the stock Sandberg pickups (no replacements as a remedy for the "modern sound").

2. What strings did you use and are there any concerns folks have mentioned for too much "wrap" on the tuners?

3. What genres of music do you mostly play?

4. How would you describe the tone you get? (And if possible, how that changed from the stock rounds)?

Just to add something here - if helpful - I play psychedelic rock, funk, disco, etc.

I currently use a Fender Highway One P bass with d'addario chromes, and also have a Reverend Rumblefish J Bass with d'addario chromes.

I purchased a set of the TI Jazz Flat JF324 to try on the Sandberg Lionel because I've heard amazing things about these strings, though from searching the forum, some are concerned about low tension with these on a short scale. Any thoughts?

Finally, I'm torn, because I keep seeing so much content lately - especially on places like Scott's Bass Lessons - about encouragement to go back to rounds on P Bass for more versatile sound, lol.

Hi mksolid. I see you never got a response here but presumably you either went ahead with the TI flats…or not. What do you think now? I have a Sandberg short scale incoming…I think…and as it comes with rounds I’m already thinking about string options.

GHS Strings GHS Short Scale Balanced Nickels 4 Bass Strings Medium Gauge, 44-106​

I tried a few and these are perfect for my Lionel. I play mainly rock, finger style and some times with a pick. They sound really fat so you get a nice low end, using the tone know you can can some interesting sounds to get more bite I guess. the stock strings didn't work for me, they were very bright and they lacked "low ond tone" for a rock EQ bass.

I use TI flats on my P bass. It's the sound I've always wanted.

If I need versatility I'll play my Jazz bass.

Best of both worlds.
