sans amp

i'm going to demo the sans amp rpm for sure but is the rbi an entirely different unit? is it a preamp? i see the advertisement says to pair em up.... why? now i'm not sure which one i want to try.

The Sansamp RBI is a preamp,I owned one and didnt keep it for very long as I felt it lack bottom end and I didnt try running them together either.
There is a post of many TBers that have paired them up and are in heaven.

I own 2 RBI's one for my practice rig and the other for my gig rig. I run them into a BBE Stereo Compressor and then a Power amp into 1X18 and 4X10 cabs. I have plenty of bottom end & punch. In fact the bass setting on mine is just past 12 o'clock. I play in a local rock band go to our myspace page and you can hear the bass live and see for yourself.

The SansAmp RBI and the RPM are very similar except that the RPM has a parametric mid control.

I have an RBI in my bass rig and I feel it's the best preamp I've ever used. I run the RBI into a Crown Macrotech 1200 power amp which drives an EA NL-210 cabinet. I do use an RBS Multi Comp pedal in the effects loop of the RBI but that's all.

I've been using this rig for the last 4 years and I love the tone. I feel that the RBI sounds less like a preamp and more like a whole amp if that makes sense. In the past I've used other pres like the Groove Tubes or Ampeg SVP and while I thought they sounded ok the just didn't sound as "complete" as the RBI.

Also do remember that the RBI or any Sans Amp gear can sound like crap too! The controls while simple are VERY powerful and a small change can make a BIG difference. Spend some time experimenting with subtle changes, you'll see. Once I found a setting that I like I make very few or very small changes from room to room.

No contest. Actually I had the Sansamp at my 1st 3 band practices & then brought my nav on the 4th & the whole band was floored at the difference.

I've owned both. The SansAmp has been in my rack for about 3 years now, Nav is long gone. SansAmp lets my Lakland sing. The Eden colors the tone more - and I'm not saying that's a bad thing, as I was once really into the Eden tone. But for me the SansAmp is better for my needs.

And I second the bottom end post above ... none of the tone knobs on my Sansamp ever go above 12 o'clock, it will put out too much bottom end if you're not careful. And for me its more practical to make tonal controls on my bass while playing live rather than at the amp.

Pound for Pound and Dollar for Dollar, the SansAmp is also a better deal.

There are times where I just leave all the settings except for drive at noon, and I'm just in huge bass tone bliss. They're pretty powerful little units.
