If you ever get the chance, watch Satriani Live! Four guys, Joe on guitar, drummer, rhythm guitar, and a very, very good bassist. No vocals, just music, and the best part is that Joe seems to really like to have a very up front bass.

Been a fan for years. I often practice to Satriani albums. He has had a slew of fantastic bassists work with him over the years.
I've seen him a few times with multiple bassists.
One of the most boring shows I ever went to was the Guitar Summit one.. 4-5 hours of just guitar wanking.. got super old.
Floating around the internet are his back tracks.. silly/sad thing is the band is almost more impressive alone.
Haven't seen ChickenFoot yet -- may be a step up.
I so tried to love him, Johnson, Vai etc.. still nothing compared to a Keb Mo experience etc.

Satriani's best band was when he toured on The Extrimist.
He had Greg and Matt Bissonett on drums and bass.
His regular drummer is good, but I am not a Stu fan.

I've actaully heard other solo guitarists using thier backing and do a much better than Satch product.

Really love the fretless and drum work on the Rubina Live (extra tracks on the Time Machine). Understated but tasteful.
I got to see him on the Extremist Tour with Greg and Matt Bissonett. Awesome show. But that was when I played guitar...
I've seen Satch three or four times now. Once with Matt Bissonnette on bass. Matt is a very solid groove player and had it locked down all night.
The third time I saw him, Stuart Hamm was on the bass playing a selection of his Urge II custom shop models. It was the only time I've seen Stuart live and I was in the front row, right in front of him. My brother and I barely looked at Satch all night as Stu was just blowing it away. Not only was his groove and time rock solid but the way he harmonised with Joe is superb. His intimate knowledge of the tunes and where to interject with a little bass spice just took the whole thing 40% higher for me.
The second time I saw Satch was probably the biggest surprise, as Dave laRue was on the bass. I had always known Dave was a serious player, as I had caught some excerpts of his Hub City Kid record on the internet when Talkbass was young, but I'd never watched a full performance of his. His tone was huge, super crisp and very bright and his performance was on fire. He did a few slap parts and showed himself to be very adept, not trying to mimic Stuart Hamm in any sense but bringing his own flair.
