Scary Repairs: Two Pedullas With Broken Truss Rods

Here's a fresh chapter in the Scary Repairs series: Documenting bass repair jobs that look frightening, and are refused by most Luthiers. But here in the Secret Underground Laboratory, we take them on. We believe in saving fine old instruments.

Most of the work on this job will be done by Alex. He joined us recently, and has set up a shop right down the hall from mine. We old grey-haired Luthiers have been teaching him the instrument repair business and helping him get going at it. You may have seen the thread where he repaired a sweet old Spector with a broken-off headstock. I guided him through the job, and documented it here:

This time, Alex will be repairing two nice Pedullas, from two different owners. Both have broken truss rods. Both owners couldn't find any other Luthiers willing to do the repair, including contacting Mike Pedulla himself. Mike is semi-retired now. He does some service work on his instruments, but not heavy repair work like this.

Keith Horne and I will be helping Alex with these two repair jobs. Keith has more experience than I do in removing fingerboards like these. I'll help with any machine shop work needed to make the replacement truss rod parts. I'll also document it all on here.

The first Pedulla belongs to Inara in Seattle. It's a mid-80's Buzz 4-string fretless. When she bought it, someone had already stripped/sanded it all down to the bare wood. She added a few of her own logos and a simple oil finish. It's a solid player. She admits that she accidentally broke the truss rod herself while working with the setup. Here it is on Alex's bench:

The second Pedulla is from Mike in New York. It's a 1996 ET-5 5-string Thunder Bass, fretted. Nice and clean, looks like a zebrawood top and headstock cap. Mike loves it and considers it his main player. But the truss rod got broken somehow.

I've never opened up a Pedulla's neck, but I understand that Mike made his own custom truss rods, his own design. And they turn in the opposite direction from most truss rods, which is part of the reason why they sometimes get broken. I'm curious to see what's inside. When we take a look, we'll decide whether to make up exact replica parts, or to improve on the design and make something stronger.

Before disassembling them, a quick inspection shows that both of these necks are actually in nice shape. Even with non-functioning truss rods, Inara's Thumb is almost dead flat, and Mike's ThunderBass has only a slight forward bow. Neither have any serious warpage problems. That's always a worry when I see a bass with a broken truss rod. Often the reason the truss rod got broken is because the neck is badly bowed. Not here. That makes the repair job a lot easier.

Also, these Pedullas both have ebony fingerboards, fairly thick. That's a good thing. To repair these two, Alex will be using gentle heat and patience to soften the glue and remove the fingerboards from the necks. That's the trickiest part of the job. If all goes well, the fingerboards will come off clean, and stay flat and straight.

After we figure out how to repair/replace the truss rod, the fingerboards will get cleaned up and carefully glued back on. Hopefully with minimal change to the fingerboard surface and frets. Just a light touchup and leveling.

But, sometimes when removing fingerboards like this, they can crack or break or curl up and twist. Then, you have to put on a put on a new fingerboard, recutting the radius, slotting, refretting, etc. A much more complicated job, especially on neck-through basses like these. This is mostly a problem when the fingerboard is cut real thin, or is made from a board with very weaving grain.

These two Pedullas have nice thick ebony boards, high quality wood. So, I'm confident that they will come apart easily. Alex is taking off the strings and nuts. He'll be starting the surgery in the next day or two.....

My local guy replaced the rod in my Rapture. By his account, the fingerboard came off without a hitch. He build a replacement rod that exactly matches the original Pedulla rod.
The only way to tell that the work was done, the neck finish where the finger board and the neck blank meet is gone. He wanted to finish that as well, but I didn't want to wait for the bass. It has been flawless for a couple of years.

Sigh. The Pedulla truss rod. Bruce, can you elaborate on where the rod was broken? Was it the rod itself, or the adjustable squared endpin?

Don't know yet. We haven't opened them yet. But I've heard the stories and I'm curious to look at them myself up close. Then we'll decide whether to repair them back to original specs, or to do some engineerin' and improve the design.

Mike [Pedulla] is semi-retired now.

Mike has certainly earned his retirement, I don't begrudge him that. But I wonder if anything's in place for his company to carry on after he fully retires?
A world without Pedulla basses would be a bleak world indeed.
Guess I need to quit dreaming and order one of my own if I'm ever going to get past the Wishful Thinking stage. Hey, at least I'll know who to bring it to when I break the trussrod! :)
 
What I have heard about the Pedulla truss rods is that adjustment end gets stripped easily, never heard of an issue with breakage. What I can say about the necks is that at one time I had 4 Pedullas and I never had to adjust them. ..literally. I too did not know that Mike was semi-retired. I knew that he had gone back to being a one man shop 2 if you count Christine) and I knew that he was not really taking repairs. Too bad, I love his basses!!

And that's exactly why I took on these repairs and why I'm going to document the process here on TB:

  1. Learn for myself what's inside one of these Pedullas, and figure out a good repair process for fixing the broken truss rod.
  2. Teach Alex how to do it, so he can repair them by himself when more show up.
  3. Put a permanent resource out here on TB, to show Pedulla owners that they can be fixed, and how. Don't send them to the landfill!
  4. Show other Luthiers how to do the job, so they'll be more willing to do the repairs too.
Most other Luthiers have declined the job because of too much risk. They haven't done one before, so there are too many unknowns and chance of screwing up and losing money on the job.

By bravely diving in and showing how, we're trying to build up a support base for Pedullas for the long term. Pedullas are fine basses, and I want to make sure that most of them will survive a few generations.

Edit: I should add:

5. Give Pedulla owners whose truss rods aren't broken a better understanding of what's inside, and how to avoid breaking them!

FWIW, I think that's the issue with mine (the zebrawood ET-5). The last "tech" I brought it to way, WAY overcranked it. To be honest, I'm not even sure it's stripped -- both the "head (not sure what the actual word is for the part that you turn)" and the truss tool are mangled to the point that you can't get enough purchase to turn it any more.

I snapped mine off right at the adjustment end, where the "nut" or whatever it is called joins the rod, by being an idiot who a. didn't know what she was doing, and b. didn't think she had enough arm strength to hurt anything. Complete operator error, and a painful lesson learned. I'm grateful that these guys are willing to work on it ... after my favorite local luthier wouldn't do it, and Mike Pedulla also wouldn't, I thought I might be completely out of luck. And like Bruce said above, it's also great that others are going to dive into these instruments. They truly are wonderful, and deserve extremely long lives imo.

Agreed. Extremely grateful that Bruce and his friends are here and willing to do this at all, let alone for such a reasonable price. This is just one of the many reasons the TB community is so amazing.

Hats off to you, Bruce, for going where others fear to tread.

Yes, I fear no mechanical devices, because I understand how they think!

We didn't get anything done on the Pedullas today, because Alex didn't make it in. He's very busy right now, doing other paying work and helping out some of his family members with problems. For a 21 year old, he's got a lot of character and work ethic. He's doing real well, learning Luthier skills as we pile jobs on him.

An alternative to the Pedulla Truss Rod tool, which is very expensive for what it is, is a harpsichord tuning wrench. They can be had at most music shops that cater to school instruments and should be less then $10.

a few years ago mike came out with a different design tool which is much better and gives better access to the nut. you have to be very careful as this rod is in reverse, right to loosen left to tighten. the one you are describing is made of cheap white metal that cracks and will strip the nut.
 
Definitely a delicate job.
I owned three Pedulla’s; 2 buzzes.
Luckily for mine, the rods were fine and never needed adjustment.
Someone needs to learn these basses because it sounds like mike is on his way out.
