Schaller Straplock problem...

About 4 or 5 months ago or maybe even more, I installed the schaller straplock buttons on my bass. They were holding up just fine and not coming loose in the holes. Well, not that long ago they decided to come lose, and I'm having the darndest time getting them to stay. I've tried the toothpick suggestion, shoved some in the holes, and it worked for the one on the horn just fine. The bottom one is a different story. It works temporarily but then starts to work its way loose. Now, after being toothpicked and re-screwed in, the hole is somewhat bigger (on the bottom), and I don't know what I should do to make them stay in. Any suggestions would really be appreciated! Both buttons are out now and I really miss playing standing up (about 99% of my practicing is done standing up).

You are gluing the toothpicks in place I take it?

If the toothpick doesn't work, try a combination of toothpicks and wood filler putty. Fill the hole with a combination of the two, then re-drill a small pilot hole and screw the buttons back in.

If the hole is just too wallowed out, I suggest getting some 1/4 inch maple dowel. Drill the hole out with 1/4th inch bit, use wood glue in the hole and on the dowel and ram it home. Cut off the excess and let dry. Drill a pilot hole for the pin screw and you should be all set.

I have a similar problem. I have just tried this Locktite stuff called Titen. It's a screw tightener and gap filler for wood screws. I'll let you know if works in the next couple of days...

I'm having the same problem. The holes in the bass are not stripped out, although it feels a little loose when the screw is partially out, but I can fully tighten the screws. I think what is happening is the motion of the two parts of the strap lock and the friction between them is unscrewing the screw. Maybe a little lube would help.
