I've never tried one, but I've read some good reviews. And they are cheap. Seems like a good way for someone to try a Bass VI to see if they like it without investing too much. I wouldn't mind having one as a backup to my Schecter.

Sounds most certainly like a bass to me. And quite a nice looking instrument to boot.

I would really recommend one for anyone looking for a Fender Bass VI type of bass. I use it as a bass, not as a baritone guitar/solo instrument. It has plenty of low end, and sits in the mix really well. For those of you who say "it's not a bass, it's a baritone guitar, you can't use it as a bass" (you know who you are) listen to this clip and tell me it's not a bass.

No. It's tuned like a bass guitar, or a contra bass guitar, one octave below a regular guitar. Just like a standard four string bass guitar, only with two more strings above g.

And please understand that "bass" is just a prefix, just like "tenor" or "alto", that denotes the range of a specific instrument, be it a clarinet, a saxophone, a human voice, or indeed a guitar.

+1 If an instrument is in the bass range it is a bass.

I played the Hellcat VI at our gig last night. It really sounded great. Cut through like a knife. Very versatile sound. I could get all the sounds I needed just by switching pickups. Neck/middle gave me a fat old school sound, middle a P bass with RW sound, and neck/bridge a bright punk sound, but still with plenty of low end. My band plays a lot of different music, so versatile is a good thing for me. I didn't even take the 4 string bass I took out of its case.

Here are my two sub sixers.

Schecter Hellcat VI. I like most of you guys have always wanted a Fender VI. I passed on a japanese one a long time ago, and never forgave myself. I definitely like the coil tapping on it. Yes it has a very good range of sounds. I love it. I just wish it was white. I haven't decided whether or not to refin it yet though.

Danelectro Innuendo baritone. My first baritone. I like the strat style layout of it. It plays really nice, and basically sounds like a strat but tuned lower. I love the whammy on it as well. I wish it wasn't the color it is. But I'm stuck with it because its so usable. Here it is beside my Ric.

Nice to know there's some other players of these unique creatures here. That Gretsch always looked lovely to me as well. I also always wanted to try a Dearmond Bajojet. you saw them everywhere on ebay a while back, now I rarely see them pop up. Here's a pic of it. Anyone try one?

Dang TNF, we have the same tastes. First the EB-650, now the Dearmond Bajojet. I too would like to hear some reviews on the Bajojet. I've got a Dearmond Jetstar 4-banger and I love it.

Any man that has owned two Black RDs and will talk about it in public is a fine man by me. Ha! :D Yeah, your handle looks familiar, I'm pretty sure we've run across each other before. Maybe on another message board in a possible discussion about Your Yammie Hollowbody, and possibly an Epiphone Non-Reverse T-Bird or two..

Aside from the nice sparklies, and the sheer cool factor of the Gretsch name (at least for me), the big draw was the Bigsby. Maybe not the most useful thing in the world, but it's sure as hell fun to play with- which sort of sums up the whole instrument, actually.

I have a Gretsch Jet Baritone which, for some gigs is the only thing I take as it can do a convincing (tho' picked) bassline as well as huge twangy spy movie/spaghetti western lines. Gets a lot of attention.

Congrats on getting one yourself.

i have the silo bass tuned e-e...which means it is a bass ...im using the vi strings because they are thicker and tighter than the ernie ball set.


and if you have the a-a tuning on the same bass then it falls into the baritone section. see below

oh, you CAN strum chords. I've got an example of it, I just have to post the soundclips somewhere... DONE. www.soundclick.com/reverieofregret and go to thwe music page... 3 clips - bridge p/u pick chords, bridge p/u pick riff, neck p/u fingers. have a ball!

MM5 with Bass VI strings (since restrung to Ernie Ball strings MEANT for it, e-e)

(excuse the slightly out-of-tune results, it needs a setup...)

those were the bass vi strings. the main problem with those is that the bridge is string-through-body ONLY, and the strings have bass-sized ball-ends on them, and I had to remove the ferrules and sometimes even squeeze them in. The EB strings have guitar sized ball-ends and they fit fine. Plus, the Bass VI's total length is much longer due to the vibrato system, so the strings are very long and the guitar-sized tuners could not handle the lower strings too well, even though they had the taper, because they were longer to accomodate the vibrato. So I like the EB strings better, and the gauge is not THAT different... EB = 20w-30-42-54-74-90, Fender = 25-35-45-55-75-95 - so not a HUGE difference IMHO. But then again, I don't favor it as a Bass, more a soloing instrument like Robert Smith uses it. One of my friends owned a Jerry Jones Longhorn and a Japanese VI reissue. He sold the VI cause he liked the Jerry Jones that much better, plus it had 24 frets. And of course he made a profit on the VI... :D
But i saw a flamenco player play on his jerry jones once and it was a thing of beauty. it sounded awesome.
