I'm pretty new to bass and this is my first post so, a bit of background. I played bass in the 7th grade, just for one year, and i liked it but never really put in the effort to get good and eventually dropped it.
I decided to pick up it for real when the pandemic started in 2020 playing on that little 3/4 sized squire bronco bass. And I got hooked I guess you could say and ended up buying some of my own basses. I've been self taught so far and really just play for my own enjoyment, not really into playing professionally or with others.
I found the Schecter Omen Elite 4 at my local GC and absolutely loved the look and feel of the bass especially compared to the fender squire bass I had been playing and the other basses I looked at in that range. The neck is super quick and sleek, I love the body style and the bridge. And that cherry red was to die for.
Anyways, I ordered one online because i had heard you shouldnt buy the show room model. I got it in and the neck and body and finish were all great. But the electronics weren't so great. It didn't work out of the box and had to get the pots soldered and the tech said something about some missing ground wire. Not to mention the screws holding the pickups in place were rusted out of the box and I constantly have to tighten them. I'm scared to take them out totally and find the wood to be rotted or something underneath Lol.
Regardless, it worked and has been working every since. The pots are still a bit scratchy and the knobs aren't the best. But I got over it and have been playing it a while.
My main gripe honestly has been the exposed pickups. I play with my fingers and my thumb rests right in the middle of the neck coils. Over time the flimsy tape has worn away almost entirely and anytime play my thumb gets sticky from the glue and gets rather hot. It's really annoying and I'm constantly having to adjust my hand position because of it.
Is it worth replacing the bass or pickups altogether for something more robust or should I just try to find some covers to fix the thumb issue? I'm not super comfortable with the electronics and don't know a whole lot about other kinds of aftermarket pickups. I'm not opposed to spending a bit of money.
Also, what are some more general quality of life upgrades yall reccomend?
For reference, I play alot of metal, mostly thrash on this bass. I have the shecter stilleto extreme 5 as well for the doom/sludge stuff I like to play as well and have 0 complaints about that one. But I do think I'd want to expand my horizons a bit and love how diverse a sound I can get out of this bass.
As a side note, I've heard that the omen extreme 4 is just a better version of this bass. Is it worth a trade in? I really love how this one feels to play.
