Schecter or Spector?

You should consider a Spector Legend or Rebop 5 string. Those Spectors generally go from 200 to 600 usually. That's within your budget. I owned an NS-2A that I payed 400 for, but I wasn't a fan of the Spector sound.

I'm new to the website as well, but I'll give you my two cents...Korean Spectors are really not bad and they won't break the bank...I know your daughter doesn't want an Ibanez, but the SoundGear necks are small fast and comfortable... You should try to get her to sample one, just to see the "fit". You never know she might like it

That is a good looking bass for $400! I have a Spector Legend 5 that could likely be found in your price range. I do find the neck just the smallest bit awkward (just a hair blocky and sticky), and I have fairly enormous hands.

I played with a Peavey Cirrus at GC a few weeks ago. Seemed nice, I think the cheaper Cirrus BXP series would be well within your price range used but minty. I think the tiger eye looks pretty hot.
