School me on humbuckers please

Hey friends, I just picked up a hardly used ibanez artcore 5 string short scale, with the two humbuckers. I've always played fender style basses with p, j, or a mm style pickup, so the humbuckers are new to me. Should I treat the two pickups just like a jazz bass, as in, bridge is brighter, neck is darker, and both would be more mid scooped, or is it different with the humbuckers? I haven't had a chance to really play it with others yet so hard for me to listen in context until I get a chance to go to band practice, so I'm trying to figure out what kind of tones I can/should be getting.

any help appreciated. I've tried searching but the only info I'm getting is more about the construction or how a humbucker works, not so much how to best use them. thanks!

MM pickups are humbuckers
P = Split coil
J = Single coil
MM = Humbucker (dual coil)

You will find that hum buckers sound very similar, with a slightly darker, thicker tone than single coils, not quite as energetic as MM p'ups. Output is probably a bit higher than with single coils, with highs not quite as well defined.

In other words, they sound great! And you can solo a p'up without getting hum.

I play my SR370EF in hum bucker mode most of the time. Sounds better than single coil mode.
 
Pickup type is less critical in your sound than pickup location. As an example - I have a Precision style bass with a Nordstrand MM5.2 humbucker located where a Precision split pickup would normally be. Switched to parallel mode it sounds very similar to a Precision and not at all like a Stingray. In series mode it's fatter and louder with less brightness.
Your bridge pickup will sound brighter than the neck pickup due to it's location.
Just like any other instrument, you'll find your own preferences as you become accustomed to their particular characteristics.
 
A P-pickup is a form of a humbucker: two coils with opposite wound coils and opposite pole magnets, so the signal gets through, but the hum is canceled out. Read these articles:

1) The humbucker was invented by Seth Lover of Gibson in the mid-1950's. It was not new technology. With the advent of neon bar signs and bad mains wiring, along with first generation amplifier technology, the P-90's were humming and buzzing badly. There always had been in radio a hum-cancelling choke coil design that eliminated high-frequency interference to tuned radio circuits. The genius of Seth Lover is that he figured out how to apply that to guitars. Gibson obtained a patent as soon as he could.

2) Remember that Leo Fender started out as a radio repairman. 3) In the meantime, Ray Butts was flying under the radar with his development of the Filter 'Tron for Gretsch. He was probably before Gibson, but Gretsch didn't actively pursue it.
4) And as a footnote, Rickenbacker had the double coil geometry on some of the earlier horseshoe magnet pickups, but not the realization that the pickup could be wired humbucking. The switch was an either/or for each coil, not together. I disagree with one point in this article: they were either/or, not both, or at least not both in series, unless modified afterwards:
Now, to answer the OP's question about how to use them: everywhere for everything. They are simply another pickup. If you have a good eq on your amp, you can tailor the tone and gain characteristics to suit. The characteristics of two coils in series tend to increase the impedance, which to our ears sounds like an increase in mids, or making the tone a little thicker so if the tone is too thick, lower the lower mids or upper bass knob a number. If the coils are wired in parallel, that effectively halves the impedance, which our ears interpret as cutting mids, or making the tone sound a little thinner, If you want more guts in a parallel coil configuration, then raise the lower mids or upper bass knob a number. Finally, humbucking pickups may, in total, have a little more wire on them. Because of this, due to intra-coil capacitance, there may be a slight drop in highs, requiring about a half-number to a number more on the treble knob on the amp. No, humbuckers will never sound exactly the same as an equivalent vintage single coil. But that is not the point. The point is to get close, to eliminate garbage getting in the way of tone, and there won't be a noticable difference when run through most PA systems, whether small joint, concert hall, or arena. But what will be heard is the noise and hum, which must be eliminated to not cause garbage in what is coming out front to the audience.

This is the thing to remember about this: On any bass guitar, and you want to do this with only one pickup sounding to hear this more easily, begin picking or plucking at the end of the fingerboard and slowly move that hand while doing that down to the bridge. You'll hear it was MUCH fatter and 'bassier' sounding at the fingerboard and slowly Iesign tweaks to lessen or encourage that difference, but this thickening or thinning depending where you're picking/plucking the string happens on every bass. It may not be as obvious on a two-pickup instrument, but it's there nonetheless, and can be a great, quick tone control without having to touch a knob anywhere.

I have one of those Artcore 5 strings. The pickup up placement is also different to more usual humbucker placement. This is a more key difference, as has been mentioned.
The neck pickup is right up against the neck. I think of it as fatter and rounder. It's 'mudbucker' placement.
The bridge pickup is around the same spot as usual. Brighter and punchier.

This is actually a general principle regardless of pickup type. It has to do with the width of the string vibrations.
As J Wilson mentioned, you can emphasise a similar difference in tones just by where you pluck.

So, even with the pickup selector, you still have a huge tone range:
Neck PU - Pluck over neck, pluck near bridge and everything in between.
Bridge PU - Pluck over neck, pluck near bridge and everything in between.
Both PUs - Pluck over neck, pluck near bridge and everything in between.

You ask about how you should treat humbuckers. Just treat them how by how they sound. Humbuckers are very versatile and there are a lot of great tones to be found.
I typically get good feedback from bandmates and sound guys when I use my Artcore, so seems like it works well in a mix from that perspective.

When I heard the name Seth Lover in the mid 90's , I though he was metal glam rocker and continued to do so for maybe a decade.

Well, with everything that has been done with Seth Lover's pickups and later derivatives, you could call Seth a Godfather of Rock, whether classic, glam, southern, pop, British invasion, etc.
 
Thanks everyone. I guess I was wicked over thinking everything haha. Had two shows over the weekend and played the new artcore for both, and loved it. The neck is def. more of that "mudbucker" that was mentioned, very thumpy and awesome. The bridge pickup soloed had some awesome bite, but, not honky like on some of my other basses when I solo the bridge, so I was loving that. And maybe it's the shortscale, the pu placement, or the hollowbody of the artcore, but, I could get such a difference in tone by where I was plucking compared to my other basses where there is a difference,but, not nearly as dynamic. Appreciate all the responses from yinz :)
