There were different revision levels within the basic series, the production life was so long that as things within the industry changed, so did the product. Ultimately, with so many challenges with output semiconductors and the (more or less) obsoleting of the parts by the major silicon foundries, it became impractical to continue with that topology.

As a stand alone cabinet with the Walkabout head, they work very well (and in fact we’re tested this way).

As an extension cabinet, it will work fine but the limiting factor is the Scout cabinet as the mechanical power handing is lower and the cabinet tuning of the Scout is quite different (and is different from most cabinets in this regard).

That's an excellent combination. Adding another Subway cab to get a 4 Ohm stack will markedly increase volume on tap/ head room, joy, guts and glory :-)

I just got the scout 12 a week ago. This my idea to finally use with a modeler just playing around for a hour I found a sound I never thought of it’s amazing it’s a secret weapon for anyone it’s so amazing it nails a sound I’ve been looking for years. Everything about this amp is amazing never thought I would be playing amps again but this literally changed my mind. I use this with an hx stomp and it does the job so well. Band practice the other day was awesome this kept up with other loud amps without going over 4 on the master. Now I’m in search for the extension cab 12

Traded it for a GK 1001 which was sterile by comparison, but louder, and a workhorse.

Im glad larry morgan music went down to the drain. They screwed me once with some equipment and I never went back.

A little late to this party, but I was curious how the walkabout head/walkabout scout fare at low volumes. I have some extra cash and I’m deciding between a used walkabout head and an Ampeg PF20T with either running into an 8ohm Aguilar DB112. I plan to do mostly recording with it and jam by myself in my garage. Obviously there is a huge differential of 300 versus 20 W to consider but the used heads are priced pretty similarly. Can anybody weigh in on what it’s like to use the walkabout in a bedroom recording setting? Another thing I really like about the Ampeg is that you can run it without a load. I tried to go to the walkabout manual, but found no such information or warnings.

Walkabout works okay with low volume less speakers has a issue with the bass control gets really muddy pass 12 o clock my walkabout blew something in the power section with a 8ohm cab the head shows it’s true color with a bigger cab and with 4ohms I play mine with a db212 and sounds real good.

Sounding like the Ampeg is gonna be the way for me then. Another question, how does the Walkabout sound compare to the Ampeg sound overall? I’m very interested in Mesa as a brand but I’m finding it hard to find examples that give me a clear definition of what to expect if I join the club.

Funny you ask I own a svt vr and a walkabout for a back up. In recordings it’s very close the Mesa sounds more modern. Bigger lows and thicker sound than the svt. However in most cases the svt is still the King because no matter what you do it always sounds good. The svt 3 pro is a really killer amp if you find one used made in the USA it’ll probably last forever

Jumping in on this old thread. I've owned a WalkAbout since '06 or so. Last year I pulled it out of the 12" combo cab and paired it with an Ampeg 2x12. I've been playing in a retro-rock vibe band and have been trying to achieve the B15 "Jamerson tone". My go-to bass is a Moollon Pbass. If you have any insights for dialing in on something close to that tone with the WalkAbout head settings, they'd be appreciated.
I zoomed in on the settings you have on your stage photo and dig that tone!

zombie thread revival.

Im selling my red faced walkabout and 2 15" bag end cabs (S15-D and an S15-N), whats the best way to run this setup ? Parallel connections with both cabs connected to the amp or series with amp-cab1-cab2 ? Or doesn't it matter ?

If the cabs have parallel connections (which is most certain unless they have been custom wired) both ways are electrically the same as using each of the WA outputs.

Just for precision of language, both methods you described are known as parallel from an electrical perspective. The amp will see the exact same load presented to it whethehr you go "amp to cab,and then cab to cab" or feed both cabs individually from the amp.

Just be aware that to be safe with that head you will want both cabs to be rated at 8 Ohms or higher. Both cabs at 8 Ohms puts the WA in a safe, sweet spot for its performance. Operation below 4 Ohms is no longer recommended by Mesa for any of the WA heads.
