I believe some of McCartney's best played songs were written by John Lennon. Writer is the singer ruled, so by not being the lead singer, McCartney had more focus to devote to the bassline.

I agree that McCartney's best bass playing tended to happen when he was playing to other writers' songs. "Something" is fantastic. As I recall, at one point George hated the busy bass part.
