Scott’s Bass Collection

I admire Scott Devine as an entrepreneur. He is the antithesis of the stereotype of the skilled musician who is surviving gig to gig. The is a good chance he will come out of the pandemic with more money than he hand coming into it. My guess is that he has moved towards so many P-Basses because new or intermediate players can relate to basic four string P-bass. I think you see everything in his videos is done with an eye towards recruiting more students.

I've really enjoyed Scott's videos, but does it seem to anybody else like he's getting increasingly hyper in his delivery lately? It almost seems like somebody told him he needed to bounce off the walls more often and raise his speaking voice by an octave to get/hold people's attention. He seemed more low-key in the past.

I think that it may be a reaction to him recording videos by himself because of the pandemic. He needs to do some Zoom interviews or features some guest videos where he just introduces someone covering a topic.

I know he has lots of way nicer bass guitars, but seeing him with his roadworn P-bass, and the tones he was getting out of it.. the defining moment in me deciding I wanted to get a P-bass. Fender Aesthetics were not attractive to me at all.. but the sound, the way mine plays.. while I'm still not into "roadworn" basses or relic jobs myself, Fender guitars and basses I would've thought ugly a decade ago have this sparkle to them now. They purdy.

He's definitely got a lot of yum in his collection.

Pretty interesting a Sire bass is in that collection. A number of people kind of look down upon Sire basses because it's got that "Marcus Miller" name prominent on the headstock. I for one would have liked the name perhaps on the back of the headstock, I love Marcus Miller but having an endorsing artist's name (maker's name is fine) on it kind of cheapens it a little but the bass I feel is terrific no matter how little you pay for them.

I watched some of his video's and enjoyed them, but his video about the Fodera where he dropped the "G.D." bomb a few time turned me off. So I do not watch his video's anymore. You guys enjoy, I watch others now.

My attitude is that Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, Spector, Sadowsky, Dingwall, etc. are all somebody’s name.

Yup watched Marcus Miller play with a Fretless Sire. I think Sire basses are terrific, I had one not too long ago, only sold it because I wanted one of the current versions with the rolled fretboard. Great sounding bass.

Yes, but for some, myself included, the maker's name is fine, but for some reason any endorsing artist's name that prominent on the headstock seems a little too much even if it's a signature model. At least Geddy Lee's Fender bass has his signature on the back of the headstock. It's a minor quibble mind you, I love Sire basses and Marcus Miller is one of my favorite bassists just don't want to appear like too much of a fan. lol

Marcus Miller has a great head for business too. Having Sire basses take a high profile on Scott’s bass lessons is a no brainer.

Also, many of those same people are now old enough with a stable enough financial situation to own any brand they want within reason, so now they act like they won’t recognize how much you’re getting with fewer barriers to entry.

It’s gate-keeping and toxic to the music community. Of course your custom build boutique instrument feels and sounds better, dolts, it’s supposed to... We should celebrate that more people around the world every day are able to join this low-end family.

Many of you do recognize this, and it brings me much joy. When this forum is great, it truly is great.

Yup. He's been more animated in his delivery, even using video tricks and memes to spruce up his videos. I rather liked Scott because he wasn't another one of "those guys". Now? Uhm...
