Scott Devine/SBL but for guitarists?

Hi all,

Been recording a lot of personal recording the last few years but have realized my adequate-but-limited bass chops don't carry over a lot to guitar. Enough for basic stuff and filling things out (reverb goes a loooooong way), but I'd really like to expand my repertoire and vocabulary.

I currently fingerpick and my theory is crude... I'd at least like to be able to get the pick mechanics down and get a more solid understanding of intervals, modes etc.

Even though I'm not a member of SBL, I love Scott and his approach and personality, the scope of his instruction, etc.

Is there anyone on YT on the guitar end of things who's comparable to Scott and SBL? Preferably free but hey, value is value and if course/instructor is the right fit I'd be willing pay.

FWIW -- not an endorsement of Scott/SBL and not sure I would, as an 'advanced' intermediate bass player, ever pull the trigger. I've been receiving his emails since the beginning and just never felt compelled to join. My right hand is solid enough I'd doubt I would get much out of it; my lack of theory holds me back and I would just buckle down and take a more targeted approach for my specific deficiencies.

I think the SBL "grab bag" approach would appeal to me on guitar though.

I think Justin Sandercoe is probably what you're looking for. Loads of good free material on a well- designed website and YouTube, some paid if I recall correctly, very very friendly and good teacher. Even got a similar accent.
....even kinda looks similar, come to think of it. He does jabber less than Scott, which is nice. Anyways, yeah, Justin Guitar, try it out.

Sounds like Truefire might do it. Free trial I believe. I’d suggest poking around TDPRI, tons of good threads there:
Cannot say enough good things about TrueFire

Jamplay seems similar, though the content and pricing seemed a little less clear.

I ended up with Active Melody for my guitar study. I wouldn’t really liken it to SBL; blued based, all original compositions and only a few “intro, crash course” type lessons. I really like it though. I too bought an electric to mess around with recording. But I’ve been enjoying the lesson content so much, I’m too busy playing to record! :thumbsup:

Follow up, now that the others mention Justin; I’ve sampled a few of his and they’re great. I didn’t realize the whole website was free! His lesson on bending was particularly helpful for me.

Also, Active Melody offers the first half of the lessons free on YouTube or on the Website. I decided to sign up because there were many I wanted to finish, I opened features like backing track and tab downloads, it’s cheap ($12 a month) and just basically wanted to support him... but there is definitely a lot to be gained from the free content.

Not exactly set in a similar way like SBL, but it's hard to beat Dana Rasch's stuff for guitar. Individual programs are much more in depth, and in breadth, with step by step instruction done in a relaxed, spontaneous manner. There is a lifetime of material there.
