I agree, and part of my aversion to it is not so much his going on and my lack of time, i sometimes enjoy his expounding on subjects, but that we have a very small download limit at home and 15 min videos chews it up quite quickly.

Lessons are laid out in courses.
Take the course or review just one lesson.
Workbooks and tabs are top notch...Clean and easy.

I took the course for a year. It seems alot of info scattered about, but that could be just me. As I am far away from home and teachers are hard to come by where I live I went for the year. It didnt grab me and I wouldnt rejoin. I just could not connect with the site. Buy I will complain about my SBL One Strap: Yea, I got mine and it took forever to get to my place. Like more than 3 months. When it got there there was customs and a shipping charged attached to it. Yea, free shipping! 860 Thai Baht, about 30 USD. I almost sent it back because I was pissed off about waiting so long. My emails to them got diverted. Not a good experience. Lots of good straps out there for that price.
I joined SBL about 2 months ago. It's an incredible resource. Scott is outstanding. I'll probably do the lifetime thing once my year is up.
It is a lot of information scattered about. You really have to find your own way with the lessons. There's lots of great information on the site but it's no substitute for a good private teacher.
If it's only about the money, then stick with the Scott Devine approach. However IMO, you will most likely progress and learn at a more deeper level if you sought out a highly experienced professional teacher for one on one bass lessons.

I've been watching these posts with a degree of interest as not surprisingly, everyone has a different take on the subject. Much in the same way that as musicians, we're all at different stages along our musical path to bass mastery. For me the reality is that it's as difficult to find a good instrumental teacher as it is to find the perfect on-line solution. There's no one perfect bass teacher and likewise, no perfect on-line provider. However, a balance is much easier to find. The on-line options offer great value for money when compared to the individual lesson option. It seems to me that the biggest gripe comes from those looking for something specific musically. Also, those using on-line sites need to have the ability to persevere and work without the physical body of a teacher nudging them along the way. All learning is good, but come on folks, it's your responsibility to turn yourself into a good musician too. Much love to all
His free stuff definitely seems a little less focused than it used to be.
But at some point, he must come down to rehashing previously discussed tips and techniques. (Its just not that hard to play bass guitar.
)I have never been a paying SBL student, and I am well past the stage in my life and playing abilities where bass lessons would make any sense, but I will say that I have enjoyed his free lessons immensely, and many times, watching them have inspired me to try something new that I would not have otherwise tried. Whenever, I feel a little bored or "plateaued" if you will, watching a lesson re-invigorates me to get back in the shed. (For instance, I never learned Donna Lee; his video last week got me working on it. In a few weeks, I'll have that study piece licked and under my belt. Thanks Scott)
It's funny you should quote me after so many years. I still follow the guy, and love his stuff. But definitely seems to have cycles of good and bad. He likes to spread a net for a wide audience. I recently watched his video where he sits down with Victor Wooten and just has a chat. One of my favs of his. and every now and then he gets a great little tip video out here and there. His adventures in New York [I think it was?] were great, too. But between the good stuff, there's a lot of clickbait filler, too. I stick around because the good outweighs the bad, for the most part.

his free yt vids are priceless as it is, and I think I clicked for the trial lessons but completely forgot about it with the overload he alone provides on yt, there's not sufficient reason for me to spend any $ when there's SO much quality advanced info out there from the many tutors, plus all the superb backing trax to jam with. just today this came in my email and adds to the goldmine Scotty avails gratis, can't praise him enuf. not to mention the myriad cool stuff you can win!
This is what I'm afraid of as well. I would spring for what... 100 a year? If it's even still at that price. But I need structure. If I have to dig around on where to go next, it's not worth the value to me. That's why I need lessons in the first place. If someone can comment on that, that'd be awesome. I'd gladly pay that price for a year. That's insanely cheap.

I did a trial of Scott's lessons, & while I like him, I went with Ari's lessons in the end. For me, time was a factor, & I just thought Scott's had a lot of unnecessary chit chat.
I think it is only valuable at the lifer level. It is a great resource to check back in either every now and then to polish something up, or if you need to quickly add something to your repertoire.

I did the 14 day trial a little while ago, and dove right in. I mean like immensely dove in. I loved it. I just couldn't afford to pay for the year at that time, so I haven't yet. But, I plan on it as soon as I can. It's not much money, and it's a huge source library. I think Scott is a great player and teacher. He gives it to you at your level, which is amazing. What he does is get you doing things you can understand at whatever point you're at. And the community is great also. Another forum site like talkbass, but everyone there is taking the same lesson plan. So, it's kinda like being in like a school or camp. Kinda cool.
