I think it would be an issue for any band or group of fans who find pornographic content offensive. I can see why it would upset a Christian band but plenty of other backgrounds - for example, one with strong feminist influences (can't think of one but I'm sure there are several out there) - would also make it distasteful.xshawnxearthx said:
I don't applaud it as a smart business move - I think smart (as in laudable) business fosters a social economy of trust, whereas this kind of cybersquatting, whoever loses out, merely thrives and festers on selfishness.

this dosnt sound right to me if you were going to get money for a domain as well known as microsoft.com you would charge WAY WAY WAY more then 50k and im pretty sure bill would just sue you anywaydave_clark69 said:

Microsoft has finally been stopped in its long-running pursuit of companys and individuals who register domain names that are similar to its own. Spanish company Mocosoft has had its domain protected by arbitrator WIPO after Microsoft complained.
The failed challenge comes after many similar legal wrangles in recent years, including 'mikerowesoft.com', which was given to Microsoft by its owner Mike Rowe in exchange for gifts.
The owner of 'mikerosoft.net' wasn't so lucky and was forced to hand over the domain after he challenged Microsofts complaint. The owner of 'microsof.com' had a similar fate in July 2000.

Microsoft forgets to renew hotmail.co.uk domain

Exclusive Microsoft was busy covering up an almighty cock-up last night after forgetting to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name.
Despite being warned that the domain for its popular Web mail service was up for renewal, it seems Microsoft - or whoever had the task of managing its hotmail.co.uk domain - overlooked this vital piece of administration.
As a result, last month Microsoft lost its claim to the domain and it was duly returned to the open market to be picked up by whomever fancied it
Luckily, the domain was snapped up on the same day - October 23. The new owner - a good hearted soul - then proceeded immediately to contact Microsoft, inform the giant of its slip and arrange to hand back the domain.
However, Microsoft didn't want to know. Despite phone calls and emails - and being fobbed off by Microsoft drones - our man behind this public-spirited deed was completely blanked by the software empire.
Microsoft only took notice when The Register contacted the company yesterday afternoon to enquire why its hotmail.co.uk site was registered to a private individual.
It was then we were told that the matter was under investigation and being "escalated". Worryingly, no one in the UK could deal with the matter so it was up to the US to sort things out.
Of course, while Microsoft's spinstresses tried to stall for time, the company was busy scurrying behind the scenes to sort out this embarrassing episode. It managed to contact hotmail.co.uk's new owner, grovel at their mistake and sort out the mess. By all accounts, hotmail.co.uk will be returned in a few days.

makes sence, thanks for that smash, i knew there was no way microsoft would pay 50k for their own domain name much less someone would only change them 50k

It's a law to keep misleading doman names from linking to porn, to protect children. Some joker had registered sites that were misspelled sites that children would type in, and was redirecting them to porn. It's sad that we have to have laws like this, I'm in favor of fewer laws in general, but people keep coming up with sad, perverted, creative ways to make money...
So this probably wouldn't apply to this band, unless you do Raffi cover tunes - this band doesn't do 'BananaPhone', does it?

Hmm I must be fortunate, because every ISP/host I have dealt with has a had a function that automatically renews your doamin a month before it becomes available, so long as you have your credit card info on file. I have known plenty of people that have gotten hijacked because they were slow about renewing a domain. I thought most bands with any established following had some kidn of webmaster- most bands I've seen don't do their own sites. Boo on the webmaster if he spaced the renewal. Domain pirates, squatters, whatever, generally tab sites that have worked hard at getting high hit counts on a domain, and wait for teh renewal period to come up- they jsut capitalize on other people's marketing and hard work. No matter how you cut it, they are low-brow business people.

Anyway... they messed up big... after domain expired you still have 2 months to renew it with some fines... guy who did it is a "scumbag" they are just dumb... we have to pay for our mistakes and hopefully learn from them... doubt they make that mistake again...

PS i still find it funny as hell... some christian goes to site and see's nakidness... runs out on street screaming "MY EYES MY EYES ARE BURNING, INTERNET IS THE DEVIS!!!!!"
