The search feature drops 7 (or "seven") from my search. How does one search, for example, the strings forum for "7 string sets")?

In the forum header, pull down the search menu to the Google Search - click the radio button to search only "www.talkbass.com"
The results will probably be from the archive, but you can click the "view full version of this thread" to get the real, live version
