my current setup :D

-squier p in less than perfect shape
-eden nemesis n15 200wt (more than i need for my room :D)

my $$ limit

- $9xx

my style (in order of most played)

- 60's/70's rock (beatles grassroots zep deep purple )
-heavy rock(metallica pantera helloween)
-rockabilly - yea i know its upright (calabrese tiger army afi)
-alt (bloc party muse modest mouse death cab menomena)
-*very rarely*reggae/ska (marley NOFX sublime)

my research

-ive looked VERY hard at warwick (new and used) but new get out of my range and used are hard to come by in decent shape
-ive poked around at higehr end ibanez sr series
-im very interested in (semi)hollowbodys but dont really fit my overall style/future band prospects
-ive looked into hofner icon series but once again they only fit a small part of my style
-i looked at the spector legend but i havnt seen any positive feedback, so i looked at used higher end euro versions but hard to come by once again


any input is appreciated i hope i narrowed it down as best as i could

Keep looking for the Wick. I was fortunate enough to stumble on my Thumb used at Guitar Center one day, and I still love it more than any bass I've seen or played.

I paid $999 for a bolt on, in good condition. With current inflation rates that's almost 3 times less than new!

Will do. Have you tried fixing the problems with your squier? It's a fine bass to play on if it's in good working order.

My Thumb is my only bass. I only got it after my friend took his Streamer STD, which he had been loaning to me, back. It's really a great instrument.


You might be set on a vette, but you should try out a thumb if you get the chance.

thanks for the info - are they cheaper just because theyre not made in europe? - is there any specific quality issues? i love the price and look so ill go try one out

broken truss rod so the action is slowly getting worse as the neck bows - i love the thumb but the price is a little too much for a used so i figured the corvette would be a great alterantive - im still looking for a good deal on ANYTHING :hmm: i hear about all these people scoring on amazing basses while i get shafted:crying:

Yeah, they're cheaper because they're made in China, but the build quality is very good. I actually prefer them over the Euros. I had a Euro that I sold because the neck was a bit thicker than the Legend. Gorgeous bass, but I couldn't get used to it. I love the Legend though, and I'll have one as soon as I save up some cash for it.

i found a '04 MIA J in my area for $600 - im stil waiting for a reply about the condition ect - if i can land this should i go for it? how does it perform with a pick? can i get a decent rock tone with it?

hmm thanks for the info - i love the looks and what ive read about it - i like a little more meat to my body and strings while still having a relativly thin fast neck - question about them tho : do they not have the split pickups anymore? can i get the same tone out of the 2 pickups as apposed to the split and bridge pickup?

how do these(the dearmond cause guild is out of my range) compare to say the jack cassady or ibanez artcore? if i were to pickup a hollowbody id have to be a lower end so i could get a main solid body but ill keep my eye out for a deal on the dearmond

Are you in the States? If so, it should not be hard to check out some of the basses you like if you can travel in a 100 miles radius in most parts of the country. both Spector and Warwick are fine if you like smaller bodied basses. I have a Warwick Corvette, and it is a blast to play despite the very tight (16.5mm) string spacing.

Have not played the Cassidy but it is 'better' than the artcore, in that it is more vintage-y feeling and more fun to play. With regards to the Guild reissue, I sold my Reissue and kept the Dearmond. The Dearmond played and sounded better, just didn't have as nice of a paintjob.

hmm thanks - i think ive decided to leave a hollow body out of the picture till i can pick up a higher end (gretsch -lakland - ect..)

i live in california and yea theres a GC like 20 miles away but i dont have my license yet so i am at the mercy of my brother/parents and so i want to narrow it down to a few basses so i dont spend all day trying different ones and stuff - wait u said warwick and spector are smaller bodies? how do they compare to my current squier p body? now that i think about it the body on my P is huge but still light - id like a heavier body but not backbreaking

i think ive narrowed it down to 3 basses as my main (hollow body to be added later) :

-used Warwick corvette standard 4 string $700
-new spector legend classic 4 string $529
-used MIA fender j $600[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

thanks to every1 who replied and helped
now i need some more help - point out the flaws of each bass please (leave the good things out :D)

I believe they all have the humbucker pickups now, rather than the P and J. I'm not sure what the old pickups sounded like, but the newer ones are fine. I really preferred the tone to the Rebop I played.

Used Spector Rebop, I like the older ones with the singe dot inlays as they have the Aguilar preamp. Will do all the styles you want to play. I like mine, you can check Bass Central online to see if they have a new reduced price Rebop, e-mail them for a price, that's where I got mine. Heck, I just saw that Bruce Springsteins bass player uses a Spector as his main live bass.

Have you looked at G&L at all? If versatility is what you want, they've got it in spades. Modern, vintage... whatever you need. Plus, they're not terribly expensive, esp. if you go the Tribute route (fantastic value) or pick up a used one. I love mine dearly, and I would even say that it has the edge over my Corvette.

G&L or G&L tribute line, can't really go wrong. Also might be able to save a couple of those bucks and fix up the squier afterwards and bring it back into rotation. Tributes are around $550 newish, and used US G&L's can be had from $500 to $800, sometimes even lower if you get lucky.
