Second Build - Twins build thread (almost)!

Well, it has passed some time since the ending of my first build

Not bad...
Really proud about the shape and the ergonomics of my design.

So I´ve shown some people and get my first order.
A good friend asked me for a short scale bass for the rest of specs he give me freedom.

Also been gigin professionally with a Tune TWB63 for two years which is not bad but neck dives as a hell.

So my plan is build two basses at the same time with the same shape and the same materials, both will be:

Singlecut
Neckthru 5 pieces hard rock maple-wenge both quartersawn
Heel block
Sapele wings
Single string bridges
18mm spacing
Black hardware
Indian rosewood fingerboard

The differences:
Bass1:

4 strings
32"scale
16" fingerboard radius
24 frets
Jazz neck pickup overwounded
MM pickup series-parallel switch
V-V-T
"Regular" scarf joint

Bass2:

6 strings
35" scale
24" radius
26 frets
Split coil angled pickups in Jazz position?
Aguilar obp3 plus passive tone
"hidden" scarf joint with headstock made of wenge-maple hippie sandwich

Wow lot of things happened since the last post, lost my small shop, out of money, no wood, no hardware...

My gf is working so decided to keep building in my kitchen-living room, LOL
Also, been gigging for a while so invested my little money in buying hardware
Yes! my addiction to bass building makes me do crazy things.

Both neck blancks have been thickness sanded and scarfed

Well, now some pics

Decided to use fretfind to simplify the fingerboard work and I should say is fantastic, just be careful saving the file in the right paper size, the printer may also distort the original dimensions, so doublecheck.
Also I had the fantastic idea of printing three strings so you get a centreline.

Gluing the toneblock (apologies for the nonsense)

If everything goes right soon expect to route the truss rod channel and glue the wings.

Fretfind is an 2d online fretboard design tool:
http://www.ekips.org/tools/guitar/fretfind2d/

Properly used saves a lot of time and gives you some accuracy in your fretboard.

Sure, I save as multipage pdf in A4, measure in the screen, print, measure again. Then use a window to see thru the paper then check again the distances to 24, 12 and 7 frets to nut, tape it, messure again, cut it and paste on the fingerboard, previously thickness sanded.
Voila!

A long time since the last post.
Finally a friend borrow me his shop, so been making some sawdust again.
The four stringer blanck get some truss rod routing neck taper, and headstock shaping. Plus sapele wings:

The sixer "hidden" scarf joint has been completed with lot of work, wenge is a pain to work with, tools lose his edges so fast.

Using two different pieces of wood makes even harder to level the surface...
Just a mockup with the fingerboard:

I´m a bit afraid with the sixer neck I´ll need to make some routing in wenge I want to install two truss rods and three carbon strips.
I got no experience in routing wenge but never had so much splinters in any wood.
Any advice?

Looks pretty already. I was just astonished at how well your ash 6-string fretless was, so I'm just sure this one will be just as amazing.

I got some doubt about the body thickness in the sixer. The toneblock (sorry) is not glued yet but Id like to go as thin as posible. My main concern is about the obp preamp which roughly measures 25.3 or 1".
Weight is also an issue.
So I want to keep it safe when routing the control cavity.
Any idea of how thin can be sapele in this spot?

You can just use Mike's templates and send them over to an A0 printing service for a 1:1 printing. Stick them to your blank and start the cutting. Sssimple

Nice templates, but fretfind is fully customizable, in this case I was asked for 38 mm nut with 18mm bridge spacing, which is not standard. Also the price of three A4 is roughly one tenth of the A0 printing...
