second go around on building a bass

the meter i have did not change at all from not having the tips connected and connecting them to the pickup. it shows 0.F open and showed the same when connected. but now after potting it shows 3.19 ohms at 3500 winds and my other shows 2.63 at 3000 winds. they both showed 0.F before potting

You mean kilo ohms?

It is pretty hard to get a connection to magnet wire, maybe it was just that?
 
i have the switch set at the ohm sign but i'm not exactly sure what the 0.f means. I'm assuming it means open though because it shows that all the time until you connect it to something. And yes i mean kilo ohms. sorry about that. As far as the connection being hard to find though, i'm testing it the same exact way now that i was before potting so I'm really at a loss as to what the deal could be. I wound them perfectly without any breaks in the wire at all on both pickups and they both did the same thing. They should work though if they show resistance now shouldn't they? Thanks a lot for the help guys. it's much appreciated :)
 
Normally if you test just by pressing against the wires, you should an open circuit reading, since the wires are insulated. That's what insulation is for.

To get a good reading, you should have to remove some insulation, by solvent or by scraping.
 
well i have finally got my wood back and hopefully will be able to get at least one successful neck out of the bunch. the 4 string neck blank i got him to cut ended up bowing pretty darn bad. i have it clamped to some angle iron to see if it'll straighen back but i'm still weary of using it even if it does straighten. i may just have to cut down the larger blank i got him to cut for future builds. i'll just have to wait it out and see. here it is though

4 string maple neck blank, possible 6 string maple neck blank,maple fb blank, two pao ferro fb blanks, and some andiroba veneer for the headstock
 
This morning i got out and got the scarf cut, leveled, and glued up so the neck is now officially started.

Since I don't have a nice big table saw with a really nice blade, I made a jig from some mdf and set in with the hand saw that i do have. I went with a 14 degree break. I'm sure it's not spot on but it is pretty close

I got off a little but was able to sand it out to fit really well

And the glue up in clamps. I definitely will have to get some more before trying to glue down the fb. since my last build 4 or 5 of my clamps broke. I guess that's what I get for going cheap. haha

today i managed to get it out of the clamps, cleaned up, and the channel for the truss rod routed out.

the scarf turned out a lot better than i was expecting, actually. it didn't take much sanding to make it seamless

and so then i continued on with the routing with another jig that i made myself. it's just a piece of mdf that bolts onto the bottom surface with a fence glued onto it to keep it centered. after actually using it, though i think i may should have put another fence on it. i got off a little in one spot

my 3/8" bit started to dull down on me at the end. i suppose i'll be getting another soon. it served its purpose this time though
 
thanks. And that's what I constantly say to myself. There is usually some way of covering up most of the mistakes made some way or another. I always tell people that i messed up a lot on the last bass i built and they can't understand where or how. haha. learning to correct the mistakes is one of the best methods of learning though imo
 
today i managed to get a lot done. i started off by getting the tapering done which went very well. i only got off in one spot and it can be fixed so i'm pleased

next i glued on some small wings to the side of the headstock so my design will fit and it'll give my scarf joint some added support as well.

you can sort of see in those where i got a bit off with the router but no real harm was done. more to come soon. thanks guys
 
I managed to scrounge a few hours today so i could get out to the shop and get some work done and was able to accomplish a pretty good bit. I got my veneer for the headstock glued down and then the shape of the headstock cut out along with the holes for the tuners drilled. I also was able to drill the holes for the side markers and got them glued in. All in all it turned out to be a productive day. I'm that much closer to plugging it up an hearing how it sounds.

and one just for fun of how the inlay turned out. I'm really satisfied considering it was my very first inlay job. the side markers went in good as well but i didn't take any pics of them befoer coming in. more to come soon. thanks guys
