We are building the basement into couple rooms will be insulated and get used for guitars, basses, etc., and my home office. That's a whole lot more expensive than a new bass or amp. My wife is all for it, so long as she helps pick colors, hardware, light fixtures, etc. No arguments from me there! She's my first wife. I got lucky.

My wife and I have combined financial commitments that we give money to every month. Anything outside of that is my own money and I do with it as I please. I don't tell her that I'm buying anything, unless I am excited about it and want her to share in my excitement.

I kinda do that regularly, like insurance.
I usually buy her something nice before I go on tour.
but flowers every couple weeks just because never hurts.

All my gear money is separate. I have a fund that is only for gear, and I've been keeping that going since before we got together. If I sell something, ALL the money goes into the fund. If I buy something, the budget is whatever is in the fund. works for me.
