Sei Basses

Just to add some (not brilliant) pictures of a pair of brilliant basses.

The first one Martin built for me:

The second I bought from The Gallery second user, but it makes a lovely sound:

Both flamboyant and five string. The fretted has a 35" scale length while the fretless has a 'standard' 34" scale length.

I went a bit overboard with the fretted so it has blue LEDs on the side and piezo pickups in the bridge!

Sei basses are lovely basses!

Hi Russ, I heard about it but unfortunately never saw it. Getting close to a full double bass ~ that bottom B must move mountains! Yes it's sad about the price hike, but Martin has kept it down for longer than I expected. Nice pics of your gear elsewhere on TB. Did you sell all the amps and cabs you had? What are you using now? Nope, still using the Ashdown gear... I kinda have a love/hate relationship with it! :D I think I want to go back to Boogie gear... I don't think I appreciated the Bass 400+ rig I used to have enough! :)

41.5" scale? Wowsers! I've played a Sei that was a 36" scale wide-spaced flamboyant (with an incredibly thin neck) and that was eminently playable but I can see 41.5" being a bit more of a stretch. I wonder if the owner tends to play it more upright? Certainly not a bass to sling round your knees!

FWIW, here's my Sei:

A six string, headless flamboyant... very tasty.

Hi Matthew, yes it's made of American Burl Walnut. The body wings and all the facings come from the same block of wood which Martin dug out from a dusty corner of The Gallery. It was quite difficult to get a smooth finish because the grain is so complex and deep. Chris (McIntyre) had quite a struggle with it but produced a really good result. The piezos produce a really convincing 'acoustic' tone which mixes in well with the 'electro-magnetic' to give a very usable 'hyrid' sound. G4
